Spoon Debuts New Single "Written In Reverse"

The good folks over at The Audio Perv have the new single from Spoon, "Written In Reverse," up. You can check it out HERE. I'm really diggin' this one. It's rather catchy. I think this makes what, the third or forth Spoon song that gets more than an "it's okay" rating from me? I dare say it has made me look forward to checking out the album when it comes out.

CareFusion New York Jazz Festival To Take Place June 17 – 26, 2010

While New York isn't a city that is short on jazz, we are a city that gets used to having certain things. So when we didn't get our annual George Wein produced jazz festival this past summer, for the first time in 37 years I might add, we missed it! Well, suffer no more New York, it's back.

Wein and his New Festival Productions will produce the 10-day CareFusion New York Jazz Festival which will take place June 17 - 26, 2010. Events will take place at several of the cities venues including Carnegie Hall, Central Park SummerStage, Crotona Park in the Bronx, City Winery, Harlem Stage Gatehouse, The Jazz Gallery, Jazz Standard, (Le) Poisson Rouge, Louis Armstrong House Museum, Music Hall of Williamsburg, Peter Norton Symphony Space, Prospect Park Bandshell: Celebrate Brooklyn, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Studio Museum in Harlem and The Town Hall.

And, you won't even have to wreck your budget getting your jazz on. That's always a good thing, isn't it? Most shows at partner venues will be priced between $15 – 20, making it possible for more music lovers to participate in festival events.

Artists and additional venue information will be announced at a later date.

Lisa Hannigan Releases New Live Record

Irish musician Lisa Hannigan has a new record out. The six track album, Live At Fingerprints is, for now, exclusively at thinkindie.com but will be available everywhere else on December 15. For those who watch Last Call with Carson Daly, set your recording device of choice to NBC (1:35 AM Eastern time, check your local listings for when it airs in your time zone). She and her band will perform on the show Friday, November 20. So check her out on that. And for your viewing and listening pleasure, check out this clip of Hannigan covering Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus.” Okay, am I the only one who thinks that the record should have had seven tracks? Why isn't a version of that cover not on the disc?

The InBox, Vol. 1

I've been busy of late. You know, I've got the whole chicks gotta make a living thing going on like most of the world's population! Anyway, I've been slowly but surely making my way through my inbox reading the email that comes my way. Somewhere in the mist of reading about recommended bands and listening to submissions, I thought, "hey Quirky NY Chick, maybe you should try something a little bit different!" So, after an in-depth meeting with the powers that be over here at QuirkyNYChick.com ... yeah, in other words, myself, I decided to come up with The InBox.

What is The InBox? This will be where I'll share some of the info that lands in my inbox. Since I'm still testing the waters with this feature, I'm sure it'll go through some changes before it reaches its final state and becomes a regular part of my little corner of the blog world.

The InBox, Vol. 1

British musician Richard Jay is sixteen, has garnered radio attention in the UK and writes his own music. He also has a fun song called "Today." Check him out for yourselves.

New York based Ivory Tower Project play classic pop/rock. In listening to them, my first thought was they kind of remind me of Survivor. So, if you like your rock with a strong dose of the whole 80's vibe, check them out. You can listen to samples of their music HERE.

www.ivorytowerproject.com

UK based MyOwnFlag have a record out, Divello. I gave them a listen and my first thought was, they remind me of some of the more aggressive sounds that came out of Seattle back in the 90's. With the exception of Alice In Chains, I got rather bored of the so called "Seattle sound" rather quickly oh and I'm still feeling mad love for the one off Temple of the Dog record but that's a different story and I digressed. If you like your rock a little more on the aggressive side, check them out. My favorite track on the record is "Black Lady."

Anyone who knows me knows that I'm not a big fan of hip-hop. There have been a few rhymes here and there that I've liked but in general it's not my cup of tea. Anyway, an email from a nice gentleman over at The Nu Breed Music Group landed in my inbox introducing me to the sounds of a young man named Tryfle, the son of reggae artist Keith Hudson. He has a new record out called Lost Son which is available at The Nu Breed web store. I had a listen to some tracks and decided that "My Bad" has a catchy chorus and music. You can watch the video HERE. If your cup of tea is of the hip-hop flava, check him out.

freesoulJAH is, well, I'm not really sure I can properly describe him. On first look, I thought perhaps he might do some sort of reggae tinged music. But I gave him a listen and it turns out he does some experimental (experimental being the operative word), oft times psychedelic, hippy folk type stuffs. Yes, I said stuffs! I found myself with the urge to light some incense and craving brownies, you know, the special kind that your friend Moonbeam Starshine's parents make. He has a bunch of music up on his website to listen to and download, so, pop on over and check him out for yourselves. "Peace To The People" is the track that stands out the most to me from his album Light Headed. I'll be honest, I'm still trying to process the record.

Everyone's Talking are a couple of guys out of Canada, Evan Kuhn and Daniel Rosenoer to be exact. They are of the progressive pop/rock genre. They have a new record out called Dragonflies. It can be found on their website (HERE) as one of those "pay what you want deals" so, you have no one to blame but yourself if you don't like the price! Anyway, I've had a listen to some of the tracks and decided that the title track "Dragonflies" and "Between You and Me" are the standout tracks for me. Swing on over and check them out for yourselves.

Jihae Set To Release New Record In 2010 + MP3

South Korea native, New York based, Jihae is slated to release her third full-length record on July 7, 2010. The record, Fire Burning Rain, will be released on her own Septem Records. You can grab the first single from the record, the hypnotic and haunting "My Love," using the handy widget below. The lyrics from the song were inspired by a Niki de Saint Phalle art book. This is one of those songs you'd play on a rainy night while sprawled out on floor cushions drinking wine, surrounded by candles and burning incense. I like those kind of songs.

Studio Six To Present ...The Itsy Bitsy Spider...

Fellow New Yorkers, the Studio Six Theater Company is presenting ...the itsy bitsy spider... Thanksgiving weekend! So, if you're going to be in town, like theater and want some form of entertainment that doesn't involve your Aunt Birdie Mae in a feathered head dress, trying to trade your Uncle Willie for a turkey leg, this might just be right up your alley.

...the itsy bitsy spider... is directed by Moscow Art Theater director, Alexandre Marine and featuring Sofiya Akilova, Jill Dion, Alesia Georgiou, Nicole Kontolefa, Matt Raines, Vasanth Santosham, Ben Sargent, Raphael Schklowsky, Taylor Sutherland and Karen Tararache. The production will run November 24 - 25 and 27 - 28 at 7 PM at The Baryshnikov Arts Center, 450 W 37th Street, between 9th & 10th Avenues.
...the itsy bitsy spider... revolves around a controversial chapter of Dostoevsky's novel, The Possessed, that was originally censored in Russia. Exploring fanaticism and ideals, revolution and conspiracy, Dostoevsky's tale is haunting not only because we know Russia's fate but also because the characters are startlingly familiar to us today. Moscow Art Theater director Alexandre Marine brings relationships and psychology to the fore, creating a moving image of a town torn apart by a few men and their mysterious pasts.

Bebel Gilberto To Tour North America + MP3

Brazilian vocalist Bebel Gilberto is currently supporting her latest album, All In One. She'll start her North American leg on November 18 in Miami Beach, FL. But never fear New York. Gilberto will be making a stop in this city of ours. She'll be at Hiro Ballroom. That's down around the meat packing district in The Maritime Hotel. I say that because I couldn't remember where Hiro was and had to look it up! Oh lookie there, I got side-tracked! Anyway, back to Gilberto's New York stop. The Hiro Ballroom date is November 25. And, for our neighbors in New Jersey, she'll be at Wellmont Theatre in Montclair on November 28.

To get you ready for the upcoming shows, you can grab a goodie. That's right, free stuff folks! Below, you can download her version of the Stevie Wonder penned "The Real Thing" for which she teamed up with Mark Ronson. There's also her version of 'Chica Chica Boom Chic" if you haven't already grabbed it.

Elyse To Release New Album

Back in 1968, Elyse released her self-titled debut record. She had quite a buzz back then appearing on The Tonight Show, in Newsweek among other things. All big deal stuff. Jump ahead to 1999. That's the year Andrew Rieger of Elf Power discovered and fell in love with the long forgotten album. He contacted Elyse, who now goes by the name Cori Bishop, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Orange Twin Records re-released her the self-titled Elyse and a couple of other songs recorded during that era. One of those songs, "Houses" even features Neil Young's guitar work. The record once again created a buzz and even inspired Dinosaur Jr. and others to cover her work.

Over the past several years, Elyse has been doing shows and has recorded her first album since the late 60's. The record, In My Own Sweet Time, is slated to hit shelves November 15. The record is a blend of melodic folk, country and pop. Check out the first single, "Anybody Out There?," from In My Own Sweet time below.

Sneak Peek of McCartney's Good Evening New York City

I've already declared my soft spot for rock legend Paul McCartney, probably more than once even. And, you know he has a new live effort coming out, right? Well, for those who don't know or just need a little reminder, McCartney is releasing a multi-disc live set on November 17. The set, Good Evening New York City was recorded in July at Citi Field and contains nearly three hours worth of music ... 30 plus songs folks. That's a whole lotta Macca! So, to get you ready for the release, we've got video! Check out the clip of "Highway" from Good Evening New York City below. And, if that wasn't enough, there's an additional handy dandy little widget down there for some free stuff! Toss in your email address and you can download the video plus an MP3 from the release, one of my favorite McCartney songs, "Let Me Roll It."
