Ten Ton Man to Release New EP in April

New York based band Ten Ton Man are scheduled to release their new EP, Chunk of Change, on April 8.  The EP is a follow-up to the 2012 release of their self-titled debut album.  Check out the track, “Chunk of Change” below.

Ten Ton Man presents this new three-track body of work that displays the same dark mood of their debut album and the signature baritone vocals of frontman Paul Livornese singing three cautionary tales of materialism, the seduction of addiction, and frustration with someone who refuses help.
With lyrics and music by Livornese and arrangements by the group's bassist, Paul Dugan, the EP carries a foreboding tone throughout.  The title track kicks off the EP, and talks about forgoing the quest for material things and being happy with simple pleasures.  The middle track "Fine Line" is slightly jauntier but equally gloomy about the fine line between indulging and succumbing to addiction, as Livornese sings:  That night I put my lips on you / Was the first night of this man’s deceit.  "What to Do" rounds off the EP with a seemingly happier tone in the melody but ends with an air of frustration as the chorus fades into the distance:  I don't know what to do...with you.
On the EP, the members include the three core members:  Paul Livornese (lead vocals, guitar, whistling), Paul Dugan (upright bass and arco bass arrangements), and Paul Triff (drums, cajon, percussion) in addition to William Holshouser on accordion.  The EP was recorded at Galuminum Foil in Brooklyn, New York.

Singer Elijah Miller and guitarist John Kleber met at summer camp when they were 13 years old. 12 years later, they met again in New York, where they discovered they shared a vision for the music they played. Together with AJ Sausville (drums), Joan Chew (violin and bass), Max Hodes (tenor guitar and vocals) and Caitlin Becker (keys and vocals), they have created an album deeply rooted in rock, country and psychedelia.
Their latest studio album This Yesterday Will Never End juxtaposes haunting ballads with thunderous stoner grooves, crafting a unique rock experience. And according to The Aquarian it, "transcends the boundaries created by different genres of music. Hawk and Dove transition… effortlessly, and take the listener on a journey guided by Miller’s tender singing.”
Hawk and Dove's songs never do what you expect them to. They ramp up with enormous energy to what would normally break into some bombastic chug-a-long, then scale back with restraint to relish small moments of sonic delight. Guitar, violin and banjo drone like slow-moving glaciers. Ballads bounce with off-kilter rhythms. Keyboards tumble down the scale just when it seems they'll ascend. This disarming inventiveness is what makes their sound so beguiling. With their steadily growing following—and a killer live show—Hawk and Dove is proving to be the loudest quiet band you have ever heard.

Dessy Di Lauro - “Jump ‘N’ Jivin”

Check out “Jump ‘N’ Jivin” from Los Angeles based artist, Dessy Di Lauro.  The track is from her full-length sophomore album, This Is Neo-Ragtime.

Di Lauro recently performed at the House of Blues in Hollywood. That performance was filmed and will be featured on TNT's TV series premiere of the 'Inside Job', on Friday, February 28th, 2014.

With a power-house voice reminiscent of 30's style music and a flair for live performance, Dessy Di Lauro is blending the sounds and influences across several genres to create her own: Neo-Ragtime. This jivey, R&B, swing inspired album is every bit as dancey as it is soulful.

Happiness - “All Apologies”

Swedish/UK duo Happiness have released a video for their song, “All Apologies”.  The clip was directed by Adam Berg.  Check it out below.

Berg had this to say about the video... "[The band and I] were taking about making something different, not with young people with all their emotions and tantrums. We wanted to be with this older couple, find a calm place in their love, while around them, this drunk angry silence, people staring, gossiping…And in the centre of attention, this beautiful, loving elderly couple, like the most tender intimate moment, dancing, holding each other, real true love in the eye of the storm with only eyes for each other, at the heart of all this animosity…."

Minor Alps - “Waiting For You”

Minor Alps, the collaboration between Nada Surf's Matthew Caws and Juliana Hatfield, released a video for their track “Waiting For You” about a month ago.  The clip stars Julie Gayet and Philippe Rebbot and was directed by Emilie and Sarah Barbault.  Check it out below.

Minor Alps released their debut album Get There in October 2013.

Over the last two decades, both Caws and Hatfield have carved out long-lasting - and strikingly independent - careers within a dependably fickle music business, Caws with his now 20-year-old New York City group Nada Surf, and Hatfield with the Boston-reared Blake Babies, the Juliana Hatfield Three, Some Girls, as well as a number of releases under her own name.

Hatfield and Caws not only share lead vocals and co-writing credit on each of the eleven songs that comprise Get There; aside from some drumming and programming by Parker Kindred (Jeff Buckley, Antony and the Johnsons) and Chris Egan (Solange, Computer Magic), the pair plays every instrument and conjures every sound - from primitive electronic dub pulse ('Buried Plans')-- to straight-up rock hook ('I Don't Know What To Do With My Hands') to stripped-down electric guitar punch ('Mixed Feelings') to eerie trance-allure ('Radio Static') to hypnotic guitar drone ('Waiting For You').

Side Saddle - “Don’t Wait For Him” + Upcoming EP

Side Saddle, the moniker Ian McGuinness writes under, recently released his new single, “Don’t Wait For Him”, from his upcoming debut EP.  The Postcard is scheduled to be released on March 25.  Check it out below.  He also premiered his video for the song on Baeble.

Tysson Debut New Single: “Lost”

Tysson, the new project from John Michael Rouchell with Joe Dyson, Alvin Ford, Jr., Max Moran and Joe Shirley released their debut single “Lost” recently.  If memory serves me correctly, the last time JM played NYC, these were the cats that played with him ... all but Ford.  They were seriously tight.  Judging by this track, there are good things to come from this project.  I’m looking forward to more tunes from these gents.  For now, we’ll have to settle for “Lost” which they are offering as a free download.  Check it out below and enjoy.

Miss Shevaughn & Yuma Wray To Release New Album + Tour

Miss Shevaughn & Yuma Wray are set to release their sophomore studio album Lean Into The Wind on March 25th via Seven Dead Arson Records.  Check out a sneak peak of one of the tracks, "Drifter's Compass", at the bottom of the post. You'll get caught up in Miss Shevaughn's voiceonce that happens, there's no turning back and why would you want to?

They’ll be hitting the road in support of the record in what is dubbed the “Honeymoon Tour” aptly named because Miss Shevaughn & Yuma Wray will be tying the knot on March 1st.  Congratulations!  There will be a stop in NY over in Brooklyn at The Grand Victory on April 11.  Doors are at 7PM and it will cost you $8.  See below for more details & dates.

Lean Into the Wind, the second full-length album from hard touring rock band Miss Shevaughn & Yuma Wray is the product of a year plagued by the chaos of friends passing, illness, depression and self-doubt, but also one of adventure, travel, friendship and the kinds of life events that ultimately help us to cut through the noise.

“We had a pretty emotional year, I don’t think you can assign one emotion to something as complex as a series of songs, emotion shouldn’t be a stylistic choice. Unless you’re sedated, no one exists like that. Sometimes you feel happy or angry or inadequate, this album captures every nuance of what we were feeling last year,” explains Yuma Wray.
For the two songwriters settling, for the moment, in California seems to have had more than just a slight effect on their music. Many of the dreamy guitar and vocal textures harken back to the days of the Flying Burrito Brothers or the Byrds Sweetheart Of The Rodeo period. Lean Into The Wind is as twangy as it is fuzzy - striking a perfect balance between the jittery, noisy heyday of the late sixties and the more subdued, experimental sounds of the early seventies.
The album opens with a nod to those sounds, and introduces the rich three-part vocal harmonies that are woven into the fabric of the album. “Drifter’s Compass” is a manifesto of sorts. “It’s a kind of defiant anthem for the underdogs and artists who create outside of the mainstream because they just simply must, “ says Miss Shevaughn.
This record, that celebrates those who travel the outskirts and explores the push and pull between creativity and destruction, hope and despair, ends much as it started, with a statement of defiance, spirit and perseverance. Lean Into the Wind invites the adventurous to time travel with the band through the past, present and several imagined futures. Whispers and roars fill these songs - yet each tune, in it's own way, has a thin veneer of that California sunlight that streams golden just before the sun sets over the mountains.

Nicole Atkins will be hitting the road in support of Slow Phaser.  She’ll be at Bowery Ballroom this Thursday, February 13.  Doors are at 8PM and it’ll cost you $16.  See below for more details and dates.

A neon noir tour de force of hi-def late-night pop, Slow Phaser marks Nicole Atkins’ most ingenious and indelibly modern collection to date. Produced by Tore Johannson – with whom she partnered on her now-classic 2007 debut, Neptune City – the album is a milestone for the acclaimed singer/songwriter, her restless creativity fully realized via the addition of some surprising colors to her already diverse paintbox. Songs like the poptastic “Girl You Look Amazing” and the sultry “Red Ropes” positively swirl with day-glo danceability, the bright hues setting Atkins’ distinctive creative voice in a brilliant and undeniable new light. Bittersweet yet life affirming, Slow Phaser is Nicole Atkins at her confident and unpredictable best – spirited, sexy, and determinedly forward thinking.
“I wanted to make something that no one’s ever heard before,” she says, “including myself.”
Inventive and irresistible, Slow Phaser positively radiates with idiosyncrasy and a palpable sense of fully empowered musical discovery.
