Dala At Folk Festival 50

Dala @ George Wein's Folk Festival 50: August 2 @ Fort Adams State Park, Newport, RI

Dala, Amanda Walther and Sheila Carabine, held two distinctions this past weekend at George Wein's Folk Festival 50. The first, they were the only Canadian act on the bill. Two, while their set was on the small Waterside stage, they were the only act from another stage to be invited to do a song on the main stage. They played "Levi Blues" right before Arlo Guthrie took the stage and judging by the thunderous applause, the main stage audience enjoyed their performance.

The ladies displayed impeccable harmonies and unlike some of the artists performing over the weekend they engaged the audience with their banter. So many artists, not just at this festival but at shows in general just get up and play their songs and maybe say a word or two between songs. Dala gave a very down to Earth performance that made you feel as if they were playing in your living room and made you feel like they were talking directly to you. They also had an endless supply of infectious smiles. I'm sure anyone who saw them perform or met them ended up smiling too ... smiles are contagious, you know?

After their set, they manned the autograph table where I said a quick hello and took this photo. Some photos of their set ...

8 Questions With Dala

Canadian duo Dala, Amanda Walther and Sheila Carabine, released their fourth album Everyone Is Someone a couple of weeks ago. The album offers up a bevy of pristine harmonies. The lead single "Levi Blues" is one of those run barefoot in the grass, catchy songs that makes you smile when you listen to it. Curious to find out more about Dala, I sent over some questions and they were kind enough to answer.

Quirky NY Chick (QNYC): I know some basic facts about Dala. For instance, I know you met in high school, that your name comes from combining your names Amanda (da) and Sheila (la) and that you have a big buzz in your native Canada. For those of us here in the US, who may not be as familiar as our friends up North, how would you describe your music?

Dala: We like to describe our music as harmony-based acoustic pop. Think Joni Mitchell meets The Everly Brothers. We write all our own songs, and the writing is very personal. Our live show consists of two voices, two guitars and a piano. We like to travel as light as possible!

Folk Duo Dala Set To Release New Album

Canadian folk duo Dala will release their new album, Everyone Is Someone, Tuesday, June 9. The duo, Amanda Walther and Sheila Carabine show off classic pop harmonies reminiscent of girl groups of yore on the albums lead single, "Levi Blues." Their vocals are a pretty fountain of melodies bubbling forth surrounded by an easy blend of acoustic folk pop.

Dala is on tour. They'll be all over Canada and the east coast of the US. Among their stops will be George Wein's Folk Festival 50 on August 2. They'll be in fine company too. Folk legend and festival co-founder Pete Seeger will be performing that day. Joan Baez, who along with Seeger, played the festival when it started 50 years ago will be there and so will Neko Case among many others.

Listen to the first single "Levi Blues" and "Alive" from Everyone Is Someone.
