Black Joe Lewis To Release New Record + New York Show

Black Joe Lewis is scheduled to release their new album, Electric Slave on August 27 via Vagrant Records.  The band will be touring in support of the record.  They'll be at Terminal 5 on September 26...full details are below.  Also, check out the track "Skulldiggin", below as well.

Commenting about the new album's title and thematic elements, Joe himself said "Electric Slave is what people are today with their faces buried in their iPhones and the only way to hold a conversation is through text. The next step is to plug it in to your damned head. Nothing is up front anymore and people are de socializing."

Most of Electric Slave was produced by GRAMMY award winner Stuart Sikes (White Stripes, Cat Power, Modest Mouse) and recorded at Church House Studios in Austin, TX. Three of the new tracks ("Skulldiggin," "Dar Es Salaam," "My Blood Ain't Runnin' Right") were recorded and produced by John Congleton (Explosions in the Sky, St. Vincent, Okkervil River) at Elmwood Studios in Dallas.

Pet Shop Boys Release New Video

The Pet Shop Boys have released a video for their new single "Vocal".  The track is from their upcoming album, ElectricElectric, which was , produced by Stuart Price, is scheduled for release on July 16.  Check out the Joost Vandebrug directed video below.

This short film has been produced and directed by the filmmaker and photographer, Joost Vandeburg. He has created it using authentic amateur film footage shot at various raves in the late 80s, along with some footage from the Haçienda in Manchester. The video (and the song) was inspired by the way British youth at this time found its own freedom with a new culture epitomised by dance music and raves: "It's in the music/It's in the song/And the feeling of the warmth around us all is so strong."

If I Dropped By... with DOE EYE

This week I posed my "If I Dropped By..." question to Bay Area musician, Maryam Qudus, who performs under the moniker DOE EYE.  She is currently working on her full-length debut record with producer John Vanderslice.  You can find out more about the upcoming album by visiting her Kickstarter project page.  Continue reading to see what I found out during my hypothetical visit to DOE EYE's home.

Quirky NY Chick (QNYC): ... and brought a friend who didn't know your music, what song of yours would you play for them and why?

DOE EYE (DE): I would play them “I Hate You”. It's a relatable song and has a cool music video to go along with it. Or I would show them a new song I am working on for my new record.

Goldfrapp To Release New Album In September

Goldfrapp is scheduled to release their new album, Tales Of Us, on September 10 via Mute.   All of the songs, save one, are named in first person. It sounds interesting.  I'm looking forward to checking out the record.
Their sixth album, Tales Of Us is written and produced by band members Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory and was recorded at their studio in the English countryside.

A sumptuous body of work, Tales Of Us has been two years in the crafting and is their most narrative, cinematic and intimate recording to date. Nothing in their accomplished back catalogue has hinted at the new lyrical breadth that the band have introduced to Tales Of Us. All the songs except for one are named in the first person with a cast list of evocative character sketches, the contrary love affairs, the suspense, hallucinations, fairy tales and modern folklores documented and the traces of redemption they find in song take the poetry of Goldfrapp’s delicately considered music somewhere brand new.

Track List

  • Jo
  • Annabel
  • Drew
  • Ulla
  • Alvar
  • Thea
  • Simone
  • Stranger
  • Laurel

Eli Mardock Mardock To Release Debut Full-Length In July

Eli Mardock will release his full-length debut album, Everything Happens For The First Time Out, on July 9 via Paper Garden Records.  He recently premiered the track "Everything Is Good" from the album on Zimbio.

Having established himself as the vocalist of indie cult favorites Eagle Seagull (a band that Florence Welch championed and had toured with Tokyo Police Club and B-52’S), Eli Mardock’s penchant for dramatic and dream-like songs has earned him a legion of followers over the past decade. After the demise of that band, he released two highly regarded solo EPs (Feb 2013’s Hamburg and 2012’s NE Sorrow is Born). A video for the track “Cut Me Open” (off of NE Sorrow Is Born) helped the song receive over 18,000 digital downloads.

Mardock’s previously released EPs were the sole output of him playing all instruments and producing. With Everything Happens For The First Time, Mardock enlists the skills of former Eagle Seagull members, drummer Andrew Tyler (on six of the tracks) and keyboardist/violinist (as well as current wife) Carrie Butler. Mixing duties were also entrusted to Justin Gerrish (whose credits include Vampire Weekend and The Strokes).

San Francisco, California-based trio The Trophy Fire prevails at balancing full-bodied guitar hooks with delicate synth-centered melodies. Formed by Ben Flanagan (vocals/guitar/keys), The Trophy Fire at its core is a musical combination of the ‘90s alt/indie rock scene of his formative years and the ‘80s synth-pop of his early youth. It’s a sound that the group (rounded out by brothers John Schuman on drums/vocals and Adam Schuman on guitar/vocals) further expand upon on their third full-length, Directions For Daylight, to be released May 21 via Greyday Records (I Was Totally Destroying It, The Heligoats).

Australian based Dancing Heals have released a new song, "Something."  The track is from their upcoming second album, You Will Never Be Younger Than You Are Now, which is scheduled for release on July 5.  Check out the song below.

One week after announcing the July 5th release date of their new album, You Will Never Be Younger Than You Are Now, and Australia tour, Dancing Heals are back at it again. Having just released their second single off the album, making it available as a free download, the new track is a trademark Dancing Heals heartbreaker with soaring guitars. Titled “Something”, this is the follow up single of "Always on My Mind," which was released earlier this Spring, both taken from the forthcoming LP. The Heals have just finished shooting a music video for the track, working with local director Thomas Elliott, of Achtung Films which will be out later this Summer.

Their new album, You Will Never Be Younger Than You Are Now, will be available on digital and CD formats in July on DEL GRANGO RECORDS, distributed by MGM Distribution.

Caught My Ear: City Light - "Sweet Death"

City Light have released the track "Sweet Death".  Check it out below.

City Light is the electronic-pop project of singer/songwriter Matt Shaw and producer Nick Andre. They first came to prominence in 2010 with the album, Burned Out Bright. The band began as a long-distance audio experiment with the Seattle singer and San Francisco producer collaborating on tracks and with friends such as Andy Fitts (Airport Cathedral/Aqueduct) and Marc Bianchi (Her Space Holiday). Burned Out Bright received a glowing reception wherever it was heard, including landing the band as Filter Magazine's Undiscovered Band Of The Month. In 2011 Matt moved to San Francisco to give City Light full attention. Since then the band has toured with Her Space Holiday, done spot dates with A.C. Newman and Holy Fuck, and contributed post-production to How To Dress Well's album, Love Remains. With their 2013 album, Memory Guide, the band has reached new heights. Combining Nick Andre's hip-hop influenced, electronic-based indie-rock production with the poetic lyrics and hook-laden vocals of Matt Shaw has created a sound that is reminiscent of electro-pop giants The Flaming Lips, The Notwist, and The Postal Service, yet at the same time, is inarguably original.

Caroline Rose To Release Debut Full-length Record

Caroline Rose will release her debut full-length record, America Religious, on July 2.  Rose, co-produced the record with her partner Jer Coons doing nearly everything themselves.  Check out the track "America Religious" below.

“I just want to write honest music,” says the songwriter, whose debut album is set for release July of this year. “I don’t feel, nor have I ever felt, any desire to write something that I don’t need to say. I started out writing just for myself, as some sort of outlet, and most of the things that would flow out of my mind were things that were much bigger than me, things that people might want to hear.” From current political issues to vignettes of personal struggles, America Religious depicts stories of a contemporary American society that is far from perfect, yet full of life. “If I can use music to bring to light real things, the hypocrisies and problems in society, as well as the beauty in things people take for granted, then I think that would make me feel pretty good.”
