Nico Vega Release New EP and Video

Nico Vega released their new EP Fury Oh Fury earlier this week.  The record gives us what we love about and have come to expect from Nico Vega, tight musicianship, strong vocals and a boatload of passion.  The title track, "Fury Oh Fury" is my "repeat" song...you know the song that you play at least a dozen times in a row because you just can't make yourself let it go.  One of my all time favorites and I know a lot of other peoples as well, "Beast", from their debut full-length is also on the EP.  It's one of those songs that kicks you in the gut and takes your breath away...and if you've seen them perform it live then you've probably been swept up in the tribal beat and fierce energy that comes with it. Check out the video for "Beast" below.  The clip was directed by their very own Dan Epand.

New Video and Single From Nico Vega

Today we have a new video from Nico Vega.  The clip is for their new single "Easier" and was directed by the band's drummer Dan Epand.  The video takes us on a journey of a guy, played by Nico Vega guitarist Rich Koehler,  trying to blend in and get work as a Mariachi.  At points during the video he looks so sad and dejected that you just want to give him a hug, tuck a few bucks under his sombrero and let him play a song for you.  Check it out below.

Just Because: Nico Vega - "Maggot Brain"

Back in December of 2009, I went to see Nico Vega at The Studio at Webster Hall. I adore them. It was a great show ... wrote about the show here in my little blog world. Well, they had a camera crew there filming the show and now some of that footage has been released. Check out their cover of "Maggot Brain" below.

Nico Vega Releases Animated Video

We all know I love Cali rockers Nico Vega. Well, if you didn't, you know now. Anyway, I've been meaning to post this video for a while now but, I got busy. Sorry! It's never too late to post good stuff though! Check out "Million Years" below.
In this animated music video Nico Vega go back in time to a "Crucible" inspired Salem Witch Trial. Will the band's message of freedom and individuality save them from their puritanical captors or will they face the gallows?

Shot entirely with an iPhone 3G and all original artwork by Sascha Ciezata. "Million Years" is off Nico Vega's self titled debut album Nico Vega.

Nico Vega Releases Video For "So So Fresh"

Rockers Nico Vega have released a video for their song, "So So Fresh" from their self-titled record. I'm not sure how to describe the video. A neo-hippie Lord of the Flies sort of thing, perhaps? Anyway, it's a good song and now it's accompanied by interesting visuals. Check it out below.

I love this band. If you've never seen them live I highly recommend it. They'll melt your brain and leave you breathless.

Nico Vega, Beautifully Euphoric At The Bowery Ballroom

Nico Vega: April 26 @ Bowery Ballroom,
New York, NY

Monday night, the brilliant rock band Nico Vega, took to the Bowery Ballroom stage. If you've been keeping up with my little corner of the blog world, then you know that I'm mad about this band. All it took was one mind blowing live performance and I was hooked. This is now my third time seeing the band, Aja Volkman (vocals), Rich Koehler (guitar) and Dan Epand (drums). I didn't think it was possible for them to get better than they already were. But, I'll be darned if they didn't do just that, get better!

Epand, who was off to the side of the stage where I couldn't see him, beats an insanely wild, yet amazingly controlled rhythm. That rhythm provides a driving beat for Volkman's primal tribal like dancing that matches her vocal style ... open and expressive, sexy and exotic. The last time I saw the them, Volkman's vocals were low in the mix. This time, she was crystal clear and it was a pleasure to hear her spot on performance. I know what y'all are thinking. Perhaps, I'd have been able to see Epand do his thang if I hadn't firmly planted myself in front of Koehler ... well, behind the people in front of him, symmetrics. What? We all know how I feel about good guitar! The man shimmy's and slides around the stage looking like a rock 'n' roll angel while musically ripping through you one part spiritual, one part sin, all parts good.

This is a band you need to see live. They're beautiful, primal, sexy, raw, seductive, intense and will completely blow your mind. A Nico Vega show isn't simply just a show, it's an experience. It's the kind of experience that reaches deep down within and brings about this incredible feeling of euphoria.

Check out some photos from their set.

Nico Vega Turns A Cold NY Night, Blistering Hot

Nico Vega: December 11 @ The Studio at Webster Hall, New York, NY

Aja, Rich and Dan, the trio better known as California rock band Nico Vega, paid another visit to New York. The band took the stage at Webster Hall playing to a sold out crowd.

I fell in lust with Nico Vega when I saw them earlier this year as part of the Hell On Heels tour. These cats are crazy talented. I missed them the last time they rolled through town but I made it a point to catch this show.

They kicked things off with "Taxi Cab" which got an already excited audience in the groove. Now, I went in wanting to hear three songs. I wanted to hear "Fe Fi Fo Fum," "Beast" and their cover of "Maggot Brain." As far as I was concerned, everything else would be icing!

Can we just call drummer Dan Epand a beast? He was back there tearing it up. Epand's playing makes you feel like you should be falling to the floor doing some sort of spiritual hippy dance ... you know, the writhing, jerky, arms flailing Woodstock kind of dancing. The dude's heavy.

Y'all know I'm a guitar fan, right? If you didn't, you know now. Well, good gosh guitarist Rich Koehler rocks, rolls and sizzles. One moment his playing is all sweet and seductive, flirty and teasing. The next moment he gives you the equivalent of throwing you against the wall and having his way with you, dizzying and mind fogging. Then he's all sweet and gentle again before taking you over the edge leaving you a hot, sweaty, smiling mess. The man made me dizzy from start to feedback finish. My oh my, I just sounded like a dirty old lady talking about guitar playing!

Vocalist Aja Volkman is primal and a treat to watch perform. Sadly, I couldn't hear most of her vocals. At times it seemed as if her mic wasn't on. I'd say about half the time I couldn't hear her vocals and when things got really heavy, guitar wise, both the vocals and music sounded distorted. But, during the moments when I could hear Volkman, the lady burned.

They ended the night with "Beast" which is a big crowd pleaser. I love that song and it's something you need to see live. Hell, the whole show is something you need to see live. They played a mind-blowing, high energy set. The only disappointment was not being able to hear Volkman well enough. It may have been cold outside, but Nico Vega was hot. I had a great time and look forward to seeing them again.

Nico Vega - Beast (Acoustic)

I fell in love with this song when I saw Nico Vega live back in January as part of the Hell On Heels tour. Several times I've put this song on repeat on my music player. Well, the band uploaded a video of an acoustic version to their Myspace page. The song is every bit as mesmerizing acoustic as it is live and electric. The studio version of "Beast" is great also and can be found on their self-titled album Nico Vega.

Hell On Heels Tour, Part Two: Nico Vega

Nico Vega: January 31 @ Highline Ballroom, New York, NY

The second act on the bill for The Hell On Heels Tour was California band Nico Vega. Walking in, I was clueless to who or what a Nico Vega was and what it would sound like. Yeah, I know, I need to get out more or at the very least stop being lazy and check music out online prior to attending a show. I'm actually glad I didn't do any pre-show research. It would have taken away from the pleasantly odd magical euphoric feeling I got the minute they started playing.

A part of me felt as if I'd been transported back in time and into the future all in one show, sometimes all in one song. Guitarist Rich Koehler at times sounded and looked like he was channeling Jimi Hendrix with a bit of Black Sabbath tossed in for good measure. There were a few make your brain ooze from your ears guitar moments when he went all fuzzy feedback'ish and slightly trippy. He and drummer Dan Epand provided a colossal amount of sound for two instruments.

Vocalist Aja Volkman was a bundle of intense energy who at times seemed to be a cross between Janis Joplin and Grace Slick with a pinch of Linda Perry and Johnette Napolitano tossed in. Her oft times primal vocals and raw energy had me envisioning her singing on top of some large natural rock formation in the desert, in the black of night, with just a camp fire as her stage lighting. Anyone else have that vision? No?

The highlights of their set for me were the catchy "Gravity," sing-a-long crowd pleaser "Fe Fi Fo Fum," "Wooden Dolls" and my two favorites of the night "Blood Machine" and "Beast." I am clueless no longer when it comes to Nico Vega. I enjoyed their set. I was left somewhat dazed and definitely smiling.

Set List

  • Million Years
  • Blood Machine
  • Living Underground
  • Fe Fi Fo Fum
  • Gravity

Today also happens to be the day Nico Vega releases their new self-titled record to the masses. I picked up a copy of it on Saturday after the show. The same songs that caught my ear live still have my ear. I'm having a bit of a Nico Vega love fest over here enjoying their recorded effort.

And if that's not enough Nico Vega for a music loving soul, they're back in New York on February 16 at Mercury Lounge with the Von Bondies.
