Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings Release Video + NYC Show

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings released a video for their track “Ain’t No Chimneys In The Projects” this week.  After performing the song during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, they decided to make an official video.  The clip was directed by Ryan Louie.

Also, their latest album, Give The People What They Want is scheduled for release on January 14.  The album release and supporting tour had been put on hold when Ms. Jones was diagnosed with cancer.  After taking time off for treatment, she is back. Yay!

For those in need of a live Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings fix, they will be at the Beacon Theatre on Thursday, February 6.  If you for some odd reason you haven’t seen them live, then get thy booty to a show and shake it.  See below for show details.

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings Sizzle At The Newport Folk Festival

Newport Folk Festival: August 1 @ Fort Adams, N
ewport, RI

Sunday morning, the weather was perfect and the crowd in front of the Fort Stage began to swell. The second act was preparing to take the stage for a much anticipated set.

The band took the stage, the band leader began his old school highlights intro and then ...

The tiny little woman with the big voice took the stage. Sharon Jones from go commanded the stage belting out song after song. The audience was seriously into every moment of it, shouting out words of adoration and dancing. It was possibly the first time I've ever seen multiple members of a photo pit dance while trying to take photos. In the end, Jones and the Dap-Kings showed that even at 12:30 on a Sunday afternoon, you can turn a folk festival into a funky party. I heard more than one person say the performance ranked right up there among the group's best. They certainly tied with What Cheer? Brigade as highlight of the festival in my book.

Quirky NY Chick On The Road: Newport Folk Festival

If you've dropped by to visit my corner of the internet world this past week then you will have noticed that there has been a lack of updates. Well, in addition to having some severe and annoying computer issues over the last several weeks, I've been on the road with limited internet access. Yeah, it has all made updating a challenge. What's been going on in these parts? I'll tell you. Your resident quirky chick took a roadtrip. Where? QNYC spent the weekend in Newport, RI for the granddaddy of festivals, the Newport Folk Festival. Yes folks, one night and two days filled with music!

The festival kicked off Friday night at the International Tennis Hall of Fame with Sarah Jarosz, Tim O'Brien and the evenings headliner Steve Martin with The Steep Canyon Rangers. I didn't feel like taking my camera for Friday's show so no photos of that! I actually wasn't sure I was going to attend that show as I tend to only like Steve Martin in small doses. But, I decided to check out his set. Martin was funny which being a comedian, is a good thing and did a bang up job musicially, which being a musician is a good thing! He kept the crowd laughing be it with song, "Atheists Don't Have No Songs" or with stage banter such as telling the audience the seat of his pants don't wrinkle because he has a 'steaming hot ass.' He closed his set with a terrific version of "Orange Blossem Special" before encoring with "King Tut" which had the audience on their feet singing along. Several people even did the dance ... I resisted the urge!

Saturday morning had me up bright and early for the first full day of the festival at Fort Adams. Jim James (pictured below) was shown some major love from the audience.

Sunday morning, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings (pictured below) killed it on the main stage. Anyone who may have still been a little sluggish when they arrived quickly got over that the minute Jones and gang hit the stage. The high energy set had folks on their feet dancing.

Levon Helm (pictured below) closed the festival this year to thunderous applause. The crowd cheered him on and shouted out words of adoration. He closed his set with the back to back punch of "The Weight" and "I Shall Be Released."

It was a great festival and I'll share more from the weekend in upcoming posts.

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings - I Learned The Hard Way

Old school soul showed that it is still a force to be reckoned with. I Learned The Hard Way, the new record by Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings debuted at #15 on the Billboard Top 200 charts. And, what do you do when you have a new hot record out? You tour, of course! The soulful bunch have a slew of dates ahead. New York, while their release party at the famed Apollo Theater on April 30 is sold-out, they'll stick around for a second show there on May 1 ... tickets are still available to that one folks, grab 'em while you can. They'll even be taking their old school soul to the legendary Newport Folk Festival on August 1. That my friends, sounds like a road trip waiting to happen.

I've given I Learned The Hard Way several spins since its release. It's a good record. Personally, I would have preferred some numbers that were more upbeat as I'm a fan of the hot, sweaty, shake your booty 'til it falls off, funky soul. In an age where vocals often fall to the wayside, Jones reminds us that you don't need gimmicks or fancy computerized technology. A good, old fashioned, soulful voice goes a long way.

Check out the video for "I Learned The Hard Way" below.
