The Heavy Announce New Record

A favorite around these parts, The Heavy, have announced their new record, The Glorious Dead.  The record is scheduled to be released on August 21 via Counter Records/Ninja Tune.  New York, I hope you got tickets to their NYC June 18th show at Mercury Lounge before it sold out. It's sure to be a good one.  I first saw the band there and they put one hell of a show. It was full of hot, sweaty goodness!

Self-produced and with their unique, raw eclecticism fully intact, it's their most fully-realized record yet, mixing together soul, hip-hop, rock, blues and funk into glorious, raucous party music that is equally full of heart.

The first single from The Glorious Dead, "What Makes A Good Man?," was snatched up by Miller Beer for a national ad campaign (featuring the band in a dressing room cameo). The song follows in the footsteps of the band's sleeper hit "How You Like Me Now?" with its monumental chorus and crunching beats. But there's more to the album than just that, from the horror film atmospherics of "Can't Play Dead" to the laid-back sincerity of "Curse Me Good," the funked-up hip hop rhythm of "Big Bad Wolf" and the epic, heavy-hitting gospel rock 'n' roll of "Same 'Ol." Throughout, vocalist Kelvin Swaby's voice soars, packed with yearning and pure soul.

Sweaty Fun With The Heavy At The Bowery Ballroom

The Heavy: October 17 @ Bowery Ballroom, New York, NY

Sunday night and things were hot at the Bowery Ballroom. UK band The Heavy came back to NYC and rocked out. It was sold out folks. If you missed it, you missed a good one. Y'all know I love The Heavy ... if you don't know that, well then you haven't been paying attention or, you're new here. I even provided visuals. For you're viewing pleasure, there are some questionable pocket camera photos ... we'll call it old school QNYC photography. You should also know by now that me trying to take photos of The Heavy is a pointless exercise as you can't take photos and dance!

For those who aren't familiar, I'm going to tell you what I've been telling you since I first saw them in 2008 ... they are "bad-ass hot stanky fun ... yeah, they're that damn good." Judging by my fellow audience members, I'm not the only one of that opinion.

The band, Kelvin Swaby (vocals), Dan Taylor (guitar), Spencer Page (bass) and Chris Ellul (drums) were once again joined by the horn section and vocal powerhouses Kimberly Nichole and Myoshi.

The Heavy are a tight band and Swaby is a sweat and swagger, high energy soul singer who can sing to me anytime ... seriously. There were minor changes since June. Ellul's kit wasn't on a riser this time around. And, Taylor didn't sing "Love Like That" which I kind of missed. By the way, is it okay with y'all that I might have a wee bit of a crush on Taylor? Shh, don't tell! They did make me squeal when they played "Set Me Free." The minute I heard the cowbell start, I squealed. So, color me happy I got to hear the song that hooked me on them the minute I heard it back when! They didn't play that the last time I saw them and that had been the only flaw in their otherwise stellar set. Other than that, the set was the same, just shuffled around a bit.

I danced. I sang. I was hot and sweaty. I had a damn good time. If you haven't seen The Heavy play yet, put them on your list of need to see live bands. You won't regret it.

Set List
  • Short Change Hero
  • What You Want Me To Do?
  • Big Bad Wolf
  • Sixteen
  • Coleen
  • Set Me Free
  • Girl
  • In The Morning
  • That Kind Of Man
  • No Time
  • Oh No! Not You Again!
  • Brukpockets Lament
  • She Got To Go (they may have done this before Brukpockets can't read my scribbling)
  • How You Like Me Now?
Kicking things off was Childish Gambino. I wasn't familiar with him but he's apparently on a TV show called Community. I'm not into rap. So, needless to say, he wasn't my cup of tea but he wasn't annoying and my fellow audience members really liked him.

After him came Mayer Hawthorne & The County. I wasn't familiar with them either. I asked the person next to me what kind of music they played and she said Motown type stuff. Okay, I can hang with Motown. They weren't bad. They had a lot of fans showing them massive love. I wasn't so much into Hawthorne's vocals but The County was a tight band ... guitar player gets extra props. Anyway, I was hanging well enough with them until they covered the Doobie Brothers, whom I like. But, the bad part was, they didn't even cover one of the good Doobie songs! Oh well.

Night 2: The Heavy At Bowery Ballroom

The Heavy: June 16 @ Bowery Ballroom, New York, NY

The Heavy played their second night at The Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday night. The show was sold out and NYC let it all hang out. I hadn't really intended on writing about this show. I wasn't wearing my blog mistress hat, I was wearing my, "this chick came to party hard" hat. I went in only armed with my pocket camera which was quickly abandoned after a handful of questionable shots!

The evening kicked off with Mount Carmel from Ohio. I'd never heard of them but they played some seriously tight blues rock ... think Cream and original Fleetwood Mac. They were good, real good and got an excellent reception from the audience. The guy next to me commented that he thought they had blown away The Heavy before they even hit the stage. I told him, if Monday's show was anything to go by, not a chance!

It seemed to take a while for The Heavy to come out after Mount Carmel left the stage. The incense were once again lit ... with the amount of smoke they caused it looked like every incense in NYC was being burned! As the band, Kelvin Swaby (vocals), Dan Taylor (guitar), Spencer Page (bass), Chris Ellul (drums) made their way on stage along with Myoshi and Kimberly (background vocals), Ian, Justin and Chris (horns ... think I got their names right) the audience started screaming.

The first song in, it was apparent that this show was going to be a party. Monday's crowd was loud but Wednesday night the audience roar was deafening. The set was the same as Monday minus "Girl." The band seemed to be in really high spirits too. As the second song rolled around, the phrase "go hard or go home" sprang to mind. The Heavy went hard, damn did they go hard.

The guy beside me amended his comment and decided that Mount Carmel, while good, didn't blow the The Heavy away. At some point, probably around the time they played "Sixteen," (maybe even before then) I lost my damn mind and was flailing around like a mad woman and continued to do so for the rest of the evening. Between the flailing and off-key singing, I feel pity for those who were around me! I was such a hot sweaty mess by the end of the show.

The show ended with Swaby leaping from the stage to approximately the third row to hug and kiss a young lady, a friend perhaps? I could have gone for a few more songs. While the show was brilliant, it would have been nice to switch it up a bit more than one song for those of us who came out for both shows. The Heavy are a band you need to see live, seriously, you need to. And, what have I been telling you? I've been telling you they're bad-ass, hot stanky fun! Bad enough and stanky enough to make a girl lose her damn mind up in there. Yeah, they're that damn good! Can you kill a place twice? The Heavy certainly did. They tore it up in there y'all.

The Heavy Killed It In Their First Of Two Nights At The Bowery Ballroom

The Heavy: June 14 @ Bowery Ballroom,
New York, NY

The last time I saw The Heavy was in November 2008 at Mercury Lounge. I wrote about that show here on my little slice of internet real estate back then. I worked up a sweat wiggling and by eyewitness account, waggling. I waited for over a year to see them again only to have the show canceled. The show was rescheduled; I was excited to see them again. But, I got massively ill and couldn't go. To add insult to illness, they were playing everywhere during that week. I was miserable! Jump ahead to Monday night and I finally got to see The Heavy once again.

I stood front row at The Bowery, getting more and more excited as the moments went by. Sometimes, I'm nothing but straight up fan and good music makes me excited. The support band The Black Hollies played a good, albeit loud, retro-jam set. They left the stage and the set up for The Heavy began. By this point, an already sizable audience had swelled. It looked like a sold out crowd to me. The incense was lit. I remarked to my newly met acquaintance (thank you for helping me get the set list) that someone was going to light up soon. You could feel the excitement in the air or maybe it was just a group buzz from the pungent aroma of a fellow fans Mother Nature. I was right.

After much anticipation, The Heavy, Kelvin Swaby (vocals), Dan Taylor (guitar), Spencer Page (bass) and Chris Ellul (drums) hit the stage kicking things off with "Short Change Hero." From there they didn't let up. There was a change from seeing them the last time. They had Dap-King horns and back-up singers. This just added to their already bad-ass live sound. I didn't catch the names of the ladies that were singing but those chicks can sang! (** I have since found out the young ladies are Kimberly Nichole and Myoshi **)

The audience didn't need any encouragement to sing-a-long with Swaby getting excellent feedback when we were ask to yell 'what you say' during "Big Bad Wolf." This was followed by "Sixteen" a favorite of mine and led to an obnoxious amount of off-key singing on my part ... more than usual, that is. The only song missing from the stellar set was "Set Me Free" ... what's up with that? I forgive them though because they were all kinds of bad-ass.

Swaby is a true showman, working up buckets of sweat. Even when he wasn't handling vocals, as was the case when Taylor took lead on "Love Like That," he was still working the stage and the audience. "Girl" while not on the printed set list was added in and a good choice judging by the response of those around me. Just when you thought that things couldn't get more frenzied, they rocked out "How You Like Me Now?" Everyone went mad the minute it started up. I remember them playing this song back when I saw them in 2008, it seems harder and more energetic now then it did then. They left the stage temporarily before coming back out for a couple of encore songs.

Though they played fifteen songs, it wasn't enough in my opinion. I could have gone for another four or five songs. They are certainly a band well worth the heaps of adulation that was dished out by NYC. This is a band you need to see live. While their records are good, it's live where they shine brightest. The last time I wrote that they were "bad-ass hot stanky fun ... yeah, they're that damn good." I still stand by that assessment and I'll add to it, "holy hell, they killed it!"

And yes, in case you're wondering, they are HEAVY!

Video: The Heavy - "How You Like Me Now" & "Sixteen" On Iggy Music

Because I'm still miserably depressed that I was too sick to go see them while they were in town (and looking sadly at the unused ticket taped to my wall); I'm nursing my sadness with a good dose of video. The bad ass UK band known as The Heavy were all over the place while they were in town. One of the stops they made was to Iggy Music. Check out the videos below of "How You Like Me Now?" & "Sixteen" and witness the bad assery of The Heavy.

Video: The Heavy - How You Like Me Now?

I don't even need words for this one. But, for those who do, this is The Heavy. If you don't know who they are, watch and discover. They're bad ass and they have a new record, The House That Dirt Built, set for release on October 5.

The Heavy put on a good live show. And so, with a new record, of course they'll be out on the road promoting said record. I suggest you go see them. If they're not playing near you, you better drive somewhere! Yeah, they're that damn good live.

A Torrid Evening With The Heavy

The Heavy: November 5, 2008 @ Mercury Lounge, New York, NY

I made my way down to Lower East Side venue Mercury Lounge again. This time it was to see UK band, The Heavy.

Also on the bill was Kenan Bell whose set I didn't see and Pennsylvanian band Illinois. I wasn't familiar with Illinois prior to going to the show, but I'd seen a picture of them with their singer playing a banjo. That was all I needed to see. I knew at that moment I had to get there early enough to catch their set. They were good! I'll be checking their music out more when I get some time. I posted photos of their set and their set list in an earlier post.

Now, I came to be a fan of The Heavy by accident. Someone recommended a band with a similar name to me. I went searching around the Internet and never found that band but what I did find was The Heavy. At the time I got hooked by this great band, their album Great Vengeance And Furious Fire hadn't been released here in the States yet. Once I finally found a place to buy it, I had to pay in Pounds! Turns out, the record had only been out a week or two in the UK at that point.

Since I had gone though the whole paying in foreign currency thing to get their music, I had to see them live! As fate would have it, I missed the shows they did in these parts when the record was released over here earlier this year. Well, I wasn't about to miss them this time!

I planted myself right up front and waited for The Heavy to hit the stage. Their set started in the dark. Now, not everybody can get away with playing a song sans lights, making the audience focus on a voice. That's how The Heavy kicked things off. When you've got a voice like The Heavy's Kelvin Swaby, you can do that!

After the low key soulful start, The Heavy launched into a tight set that kept the audience enchanted. Vocalist Swaby takes the old school soul singer approach to performing ... working the stage and working up a sweat. He didn't limit himself to the stage either. He jumped into the crowd several times getting up close and personal with the audience. The man is an entertainer.

The rest of the band, Dan Taylor (guitar), Spencer Page (bass) and Chris Ellul (drums) while more sedate than their frontman, held their own playing their dirty mix of soul, funk and rock. They kept you moving with their intoxicating take no prisoners efficiency. They were hot and stanky! Yeah, they were that damn good.

The set list flowed perfectly. I would have been happy with any set as long as it included "Set Me Free" which this one did. There were plenty of opportunities to sing along or howl as was the case during "Big Bad Wolf." Swaby sang to the ladies and interacted well with the energetic audience.

The Heavy put on a great show. They asked via song "How Do You Like Me Now?" With the smiles and enthusiasm of the audience, I would say, everyone liked them plenty! I enjoyed myself. I wiggled and eyewitness accounts say I even waggled. I was a dancing sweaty mess.

The Heavy are dirty. They're funky. They're full of sweaty soul. They're bad ass hot stanky fun ... yeah, again, they're that damn good. They are, well, HEAVY!

And Mr. Swaby, you can sing to me anytime.
