Audio Fiction Dazzle At Pianos

Audio Fiction: January 28 @ Pianos, New York, NY

It was a cold Thursday night in NYC and I, your Quirky blogger, decided to take in a show. I made my way down to LES club Pianos to catch New York band Audio Fiction rock out their first show of the new year. Nothing like a good dose of rock 'n' roll to warm you up.

I was introduced to Audio Fiction's music last year when I saw them perform as part of Craic Fest. After that, they became a band I've been keeping my eye on. For those uninitiated, Audio Fiction are a pop rock force de triomphe.

The band, Kristin Wilson Ryan (vocals), Darren Korb (bass), Charles Park (guitar), Mark O'Toole (drums) and special guest Dennis Natal (keyboards) took to the stage and ripped through a spot on set. And, they were cheered on by a bevy of vocal fans.

Ryan looks the part of a cool rock chick and has the vocal power to back it up. The lady has a set of lungs to be reckoned with. She can go from delicate and subtle to sexy and cheeky to an outright classic rock yell without batting an eye. It's as if she has a blend of Ann & Nancy Wilson, Grace Slick and Pat Benatar mixed in with her own dazzling wealth of talent.

The rhythm section of Korb and O'Toole kept a tight pounding beat. They caused me to wiggle about oddly in my attempts at dancing during various points of the show. They work in tandem so well that you got nothing but a flawless dose of tantalizing rhythms. Go on with your bad selves gentleman!

We all know I'm a guitar fan. Holy moly, Park shreds through bit after bit leaving you floored and slightly breathless. The man brings guitar god arena rock playing to the small stage and owns it.

They roared through a solid setlist all of which seemed to be crowd favorites. I was personally tickled to hear "Suffocate," which is my favorite song from their self-titled album, and "Kite High."

It was a terrifically fun show. I was glad to finally get the chance to check out another gig and I look forward to seeing them again!

Minute Tease: "Suffocate"

CareFusion Jazz Fest New York Details & Dates For CareFusion Newport Jazz Fest

Last year, New York went without its annual George Wein produced jazz festival for the first time in 37 years. Well, this year, it's back! Today, Wein announced details about the CareFusion Jazz Festival New York and dates for the CareFusion Newport Jazz Festival.

“CareFusion’s continued sponsorship of jazz, including the long-standing event in Newport and now bringing back the festival in New York, is nothing short of a miracle,” said Wein. “Since 1972, fans have been enjoying this celebration of artistic excellence. With CareFusion’s exemplary support for the arts, it reinforces how companies are tying education and community engagement into their business practices.”

The CareFusion Jazz Festival New York will be held June 17 - 26, 2010. Wein, along with his New Festival Productions, LLC, again will produce a 10-day festival that will cover the city with concerts. For the 2010 CareFusion Jazz Festival New York, Wein will be producing concerts in partnership with some of the city’s most unique and culturally significant venues. The venues will include: Carnegie Hall, City Parks Foundation’s Central Park SummerStage, Crotona Park in the Bronx, City Winery, Harlem Stage Gatehouse, The Jazz Gallery, Jazz Standard, (Le) Poisson Rouge, Louis Armstrong House Museum, Music Hall of Williamsburg, Peter Norton Symphony Space, Prospect Park Bandshell: Celebrate Brooklyn, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Studio Museum in Harlem and The Town Hall. Most shows at partner venues will be priced between $15 to $20, making it possible for more music lovers to participate in festival events.

Returning to Rhode Island, the CareFusion Newport Jazz Festival is slated for August 6 - 8, 2010. Last year, the Newport event drew 13,000 attendees.

Updates on artists and venues will be announced at a later date and also found on the festival Web site at www.carefusionjazz.com.

Prepare to get your jazz on folks!

Corinne Bailey Rae Releases New Album & Announces US Tour Dates

The much anticipated new record from Grammy winning songstress Corinne Bailey Rae was released today, January 26. The Sea, the follow-up to her 2006 self-titled debut, is an intense, emotion filled ride. This is the record you'll put on when you're "goin' through stuff" or "gettin' over stuff." Bailey Rae's vocals are sweet and charming; they're beautiful and skirting the edge of darkness. They're fragile one moment and the next there's a show of inner strength. The highlight of the album for me is "The Blackest Lily."

It has been announced that Bailey Rae will tour North America this Spring. And guess what New Yorkers?! Yep, she's going to pay us a visit. She'll be a Webster Hall on May 3. See below for a list of tour dates.

To promote The Sea, Bailey Rae will be making a number of television appearances. She'll be on Tavis Smiley, January 27; Ellen, January 28 and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson on January 29. Also, prior to her just announced tour, she will appear on Late Show with David Letterman, March 1 and Jimmy Kimmel Live on March 8. Check your local listings for appropriate times in your area.

Back in December, I went to see Bailey Rae at Hiro Ballroom. She was doing one of a handful of live previews of The Sea. That show was recorded for PBS' Live From The Artists Den which will air in the Spring. But, in celebration of the record release, four songs from the performance will be featured on the free online video service Hulu beginning today. Check it out below.
