Newport Folk Festival: Day 2 Through My Lens

July 27, 2013 @ Fort Adams State Park, Newport, RI

While we had to endure rain on day one of the Newport Folk Festival, day two turned out to be a right nice.  This is what it looked like through my lens.

Museum Stage

Joe Fletcher's Nashville To Newport

Joe Fletcher curated the Museum Stage for the afternoon.  I somehow managed to miss nearly everything over there.  I did catch some of Bobby Bare, Jr.'s set and I did spot Mr. Fletcher across the field and managed to say hey to him.

I saw Father John Misty here, there and every where roaming the grounds...and even doing nothing but simply standing, he pulled off the nonchalant rock star thing effortlessly.  He just has that look.  He took the stage with what he described as strawberry moonshine...we now have what we describe as a music crush on Mr. Tillman.

This was one of my favorite sets of the day.  And, if you happened to bump into Nicki Bluhm while strolling around the festival, then you know what a super nice, down to Earth, lady she is.

Jim James seems like a nice fella...we've exchanged pleasantries in passing. But Mr. James, your art apparently goes over my head. I don't understand.  But there were a whole field full of people who did understand and did so enthusiastically.

The Avett Brothers closed out day two to an enthusiastic crowd.  And, on a personal achievement note, I'm happy to say my Avett photo curse has been broken!

Newport Folk Festival: Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls

Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls: July 27, 2013 @ Fort Adams State Park, Newport, RI

Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls took the stage at Newport Folk Festival full of unrepentant badassness.  Turner and his Sleeping Souls were full of energy and had the audience in the palms of their hands.  If you missed it or want to relive it, the good folks over at NPR captured it all for you, HERE.

Newport Folk Festival: John McCauley

John McCauley: July 26, 2013 @ Fort Adams State Park, Newport, RI

John McCauley made another appearance at the Newport Folk Festival; in recent years, he's been there in some configuration or another.  This year, he came and did his thing solo. He took the stage looking all Leave It To Beaver, clean cut, boy next door...well, as clean cut, boy next door as a man can get with random looking stuff inked on his arms and low level facial hair.

As it poured down rain outside, McCauley played about 15 songs under the tented Quad Stage.  This was probably the most controlled I've personally heard him vocally.  He was joined by Vanessa Carlton on "In Our Time", a song they duet on from the upcoming Deer Tick album Negativity.  And, in a move that was met with roaring approval from the audience, his mother, Marge McCauley, sporting a tee-shirt with "Mama Deer Tick" across the back, joined him for a cover of "Margaritaville".  It was a fun set.  My only complaint, no "Baltimore Blues No. 1" ... guess he didn't pick up on my silent plea to play that!  For those that missed it or want to re-live it, the good folks at NPR are streaming it HERE.

Oh, and New York, McCauley along with the rest of Deer Tick will be at Webster Hall on Thursday, November 7.  Doors are at 6PM, it'll cost you $20 and they've got Robert Ellis on the bill with them.

If I Dropped By... with Justin Vassallo of Bedfellows

This week I posed my "If I Dropped By..." question to Justin Vassallo of Brooklyn based band Bedfellows.  I've been digging the track "Coming Up" which you can check out at the end of my "visit".  If you're in the New York area, you can catch Bedfellows live and in-person at Pianos on Wednesday, August 7 at 9PM and it'll cost you $8.  They will also be at Cake Shop on Thursday, August 22.  Continue reading to see what I found out during my hypothetical visit to his home.

Quirky NY Chick (QNYC): ... and brought a friend who didn't know your music, what song of yours would you play for them and why?

Justin Vassallo (JV): "Like A Hostage" from our new EP "World Apart". When we did the final mix, it had a euphoric rush to it that beat any other mix session I've been a part of. When you've worked hard at something, it's a revelation and a relief when you catch yourself smiling a bit at the end result.

Newport Folk Festival: Kingsley Flood

Kingsley Flood: July 26, 2013 @ Fort Adams State Park, Newport, RI

Kingsley Flood made their debut at the Newport Folk Festival.  They kicked things off on the main stage Friday with an energetic set.  It was my first time seeing them but they hooked me with "Pick Your Battles."  If you missed it or want to re-live it, the good folks over at NPR have it HERE

While at the festival, Naseem Khuri did a workshop for the Boys and Girls Club where he played some music for them and answered questions.
