Photos: April Smith & The Great Picture Show At Mercury Lounge

April Smith And The Great Picture Show: March 10 @ Mercury Lounge, New York, NY

April Smith And The Great Picture Show released Songs For A Sinking Ship a couple of weeks ago. I recommend picking it up by the way. Last night they took to the stage of Mercury Lounge for the record release party. The room was packed with dancing, sing-a-long fans who came to have a good time. Smith, a fun gal to watch perform, was the perfect hostess. She is effervescent with a dash of sauce and along with her band put on a spot on performance. Check out photos from the set below.

Album Review: April Smith And The Great Picture Show - Songs For A Sinking Ship

Retro, sassy, fun and quirky, those are the words that spring to mind when listening to the new record by April Smith and the Great Picture Show. Songs For A Sinking Ship, for all of it's whimsical fun is a sophisticated work piece of work.

Smith has all of the ingredients to make a top notch album and that's just what she did. There is good songwriting, good musicians and killer vocals. One minute Smith is swinging, the next she's doing a torch song, the next she's pulling off a 40's style "girl" singer song. There are a wealth of instruments and good old fashioned hand claps on the record to the create the delightfully retro sound. There's organ, horns, accordion, Mellotron, suitcases, ukulele and did I hear a kazoo? Did I?

April Smith To Release Songs For A Sinking Ship, 2/23

Brooklyn based singer-songwriter April Smith is set to release her new record Songs For A Sinking Ship on February 23. I first became familiar with Smith when I came across her EP Live From The Penthouse in 2008 and was instantly hooked on "Wow and Flutter" and "Colors." Those of you who have somehow missed hearing Smith's work, she's a terrifically fun, jazzy, quirky and sassy. For a taste of April Smith and the Great Picture Show, check out the insanely catchy "Colors" below. I look forward to getting my hands on Songs For A Sinking Ship.

Also, Smith is on the road. Alas, there are no current NYC dates. She's one of those artists that every time she plays in town, I manage to miss. It's like some great jinx! Check her website for dates near you. She's doing shows through mid-February with Langhorne Slim and finishing up February on the road with Fanfarlo.
