Israel Nash Gripka & The Fieros Sing For Their Supper

Israel Nash Gripka & The Fieros sing for their supper ... literally. They kick things off tonight in Bridgeport, CT at the Acoustic Cafe and will make their way South before coming back North and ending up at Pianos here on the LES. Both acts will sing a song or three for one free meal. So, if you happen upon them at one of their stops, feed 'em and get some songs played as thanks. And, to keep folks posted on their travels, they'll be keeping a video blog HERE. Head down to the MP3 Grab below and get "Gennessee Falls."

Israel Nash Gripka and The Fieros head out this weekend from NYC to the southern States, stopping along the route to locally owned and operated diners and food joints, with guitars, and forks, in hand. Both acts will sing a song or three for one free meal, a tour premise not only feeding the bands their much needed daily sustenance, but also presenting a departure from the way individuals hear independent artists.

Though these eatery gigs will be without amps, they won't be without soul. The music is sincere and heartfelt, just like mom's meatloaf... but also RAW & crunchy, like her veggies. Check out an mp3 from a recent living room rehearsal below and feel free to post.

The Minutes - "Black Keys"

My official song of the moment, "Black Keys" by Dublin trio, The Minutes. I've had this song on repeat for the last day. I want to hear more from these guys! Check out the song below.

Dublin trio The Minutes have gigged extensively in Ireland and the UK. Touring with the likes of Albert Hammond Jnr (The Strokes),The Pigeon Detectives, The Von Bondies & Supergrass. Previous singles include 'Black Keys' 'Harmonic' and 'Ukraine'. Ukraine helped the band establish themselves in the Dublin music scene thanks to heavy rotation on local indie stations.

After a year long residency in '09 at Dublin live music staple Whelans, The Minutes developed a unique rock n' roll show to call their own.

After becoming one of Dublin's must see live acts, it came time to record their debut album and in October of 2009 the three piece headed to Marcata Recordings in upstate New York. Together with producer Kevin McMahon the band have crafted a ten track album that captures the energy of their live sets. The record blasts through one foot stomper after another, from the 2 minute rawness of Secret History, to the crashing drum solo on Believer right up to live favourite In My Time Of Dying. Due for release mid 2010, 'Marcata' is a record you'll come back to time and time again.

With a trip stateside again in March to attend the SXSW festival this year promises to be an exciting year for the Dublin three-piece!

They're hitting SXSW next week.

Footstone's Lippy Gets Re-released

Dromedary Records has re-released the 1995 full-length debut from Footstone, Lippy. Check out "Mad-G" below. And, you can head on over to Dromedary-Records.com site to pick up the record.

After all the years of flying under the radar with an over the top sound, “inkie rock” returns…with cold beer and a language all its own. Footstone is back, led by singer/guitarist Ralph Malanga, and a passion for beer-swilling, supercharged power pop. Fueled by the thunderous bass antics of Mark Abney and the driving drums of Dave Noel, Footstone’s percussive, twin-guitar attack (Malanga along with guitarist Eric Greenberg) is a combination of raw energy and melodic hooks rarely seen in today’s indie rock.

Phenomenal Handclap Band Gets Remixed By Architeq

The Phenomenal Handclap Band have had their song "Baby" remixed by Sc
ottish DJ Architeq. Check it out below. The original is on their self-titled debut album. And, if you're looking to catch them live, they're on tour. New York, they'll be here on home turf when they take the stage to support Gossip over at Terminal 5 on April 30.

The track unsettles but compels, simultaneously working its way into the "pleasure" and "fear" centers of a listener's brain. It's creepy, smoky, and delightfully, addictively catchy.

Tour Dates

  • 3/05 - Glasgow, SCOTLAND - Captain's Rest
  • 3/06 - Liverpool, UK - Kazimier
  • 3/07 - Nottingham, UK - Bodega Social Club

Talking To Walls To Play The Local 269, 3/13

The good lads known as Talking To Walls are coming to visit us. I like visitors like them. They're cool visitors. They rock out on stage while you toss back drinks unlike you old college buddy Animal who sucks back all the liquor in your house and lists your sofa as his new place of residence. So, New Yorkers, if you're looking for a good time Saturday, March 13, then perhaps you should swing by The Local 269 on the LES and check them out.

In case you didn't know, they have a new record out, We Were Not So Tall. Check it out.

Doppelgänger Rock 'n' F'in Rolled

Doppelgänger: March 4 @ John Varvato
s Store on Bowery, New York, NY

Back in January, I dropped by a club to check out some live music. I didn’t go to see anyone particular I just went to have fun. That was the night I experienced Doppelgänger.

Having experienced the band, I happily hopped on the train and headed down to John Varvatos’ store on Bowery, the former spot of the legendary CBGB’s. Doppelgänger is a minimal two man set up, Ryan (drums/vocals) and Rob (guitar). They’re loud, they’re raw and they rock.

I am officially, completely and totally in lust with them. The minute they start to play you get a shivering tingly feeling. It’s similar to the feeling I got as a kid when I discovered my mom’s Goat’s Head Soup album. I’d open up that album, see the cardboard flat of the goat head in the soup, squeal and run off feeling all tingly with chills. But, I kept going back to look at it. It excited me. Minus the running off part, that’s the feeling I get with Doppelgänger.

They have an EP that’s coming out, I believe, this month. It’s titled Get It Over With Already. Keep and eye out for that. I’m looking forward to getting my quirky little hands on it.

Should they be playing and you’re in the general vicinity, you should go see them. As a matter of fact, if you're in the New York area, they’ll be at Glasslands Gallery in Brooklyn on March 18, go check ‘em out.

My camera sound doesn’t do them justice…

Tuesday, March 30, Killola will be playing The Studio at Webster Hall. Y'all know I'm in lust with Killola. How could I not be, right? Well, also on the bill that night will be Sick of Sarah. To celebrate the upcoming show, I decided to show a little Sick of Sarah love. Check out their video for "Paint Like That" below. It was directed/animated by Jodi Sandler.

And... in case you missed it when it was posted the last time (even if you didn't miss it and have seen it a hundred times) ... check out Killola's video for "Cracks In The Armor." It was directed by Hank Friedmann. If you haven't already picked up tickets for one of their shows, you should ... guaranteed fun. They're hella good live. Ooh, I said "hella" ... wow.
