Talking To Walls: Beard Races For Charity

Happy Novembeard! Yeah, okay, it's not a real holiday but it is notable. East coast rockers Talking to Walls are growing beards!

Three fourths of the band, Brian Kelly who is supporting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Nat Webb who is supporting the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America and Matt Miklos who is supporting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society are in the mist of a beard race.

How did all of this come about? Well, Miklos who normally sports a beard, set about trying to convince smooth as a baby's bottom Webb to grow a beard while on tour this past summer. Apparently, Miklos wore him down and it was decided that if you're going to grow a beard, it might as well be done for charity! So, November 1, the three aforementioned members of Talking to Walls shaved, started sprouting and launched a website to chronicle it all. Fans can vote on the band members' beards and submit their own beards which can also be voted on. The bands votes are submitted as online donations. Donations will also be accepted at shows.

100% of all donations will go to the charity of the band member that wins. There will be prizes for fans as well.

Voting opened Monday, November 15th and runs through midnight, Tuesday, November 30th. So, head on over to the Novembeard site, join in on the fun and help out a charity in the process.

Q&A: 8 Questions With Talking To Walls

A while back, I became a fan of Talking To Walls. I've written about them here on my little slip of land in the blog world. I've gone to witness that which is TTWs live several times. And, having had a chance to chat with them at shows, it's confirmed right away that they're not only talented musicians but, witty a
nd charming as well. So, I thought to myself, I should interview these guys! I fired off some questions, sent them over to Brian Kelly (vocals/guitar), Nat Webb (guitar/vocals), Matt Krupa (drums) and Matt Miklos (bass), they sent them back ... with answers and here's the whole shebang for you. And, if that's not enough entertainment for you, there's an MP3 Grab at the end of the interview!

Quirky NY Chick (QNYC): You released a new album We Were Not So Tall (WWNST) a couple of months ago. How would you say it differs from your debut record, Naked?

Matt Miklos (MM): Well, I'm mentioned in the liner notes of WWNST...

Brian Kelly (BK): We learned to arrange songs. It was like going from Steamboat Willy to Avatar. For me, anything I thought I knew about making records was completely blown away once we started working with Greg (Giorgio, producer). That also came from this being a much more collaborative record. I pretty much wrote Naked, with some help from the other guys. WWNST is really the result of all of us looking at each other's parts as well as our own, and collaborating on the writing and arranging.

Nat Webb (NW): The important difference is that I'm not on Naked. No but seriously, Naked was really Brian's baby, as far as I can tell, whereas We Were Not So Tall was more of a team effort. You get songs that I wrote ("Came to You" and "Cloudbusters") and songs that Brian and I wrote together ("Running Out") and a lot of arranging input from everybody. A ton of guest musicians, experiments in orchestration and recording... Naked is simple, and WWNST is complex. Naked was a tea party; WWNST is a drunken rager at your mom's house when she's away for the weekend, and somehow the local high school kids found out, and you're like "Who are these kids and why are they in my house?" and later the police come.

Talking To Walls Wax Poetic

Talking To Walls: May 28 @ Bowery Poet
ry Club, New York, NY

Friday night, Talking To Walls took the stage at LES venue Bowery Poetry Club. We've discussed this band before ... the Connecticut rockers who put on fun live shows, have a spankin' new record, We Were Not So Tall and have been bustin' their asses doing shows in support of the record. Yeah, those guys.

I've seen the band, Brian Kelly (vocals/guitar), Nat Webb (guitar/vocals), Matt Krupa (drums) and Matt Miklos (bass), a few times and always have great fun when I do. But, there was a little something different this time out. There was more of an overall excitement, a bit of a different vibe. They for lack of a better word, vibrated. They were slightly sloppy, in the edgy, take my hand, come jump off the side of the cliff with me; I promise it'll be okay, sort of way. A couple of points during the night I thought assault charges might have to be pressed on Kelly's mic stand for bashing him about the face on occasion. I hear they've since ceased working together.

They showcased the new record and did they bust out some Smashing Pumpkins? Hey, my Pumpkins knowledge for the most part starts and stops with Gish so I could be wrong. I managed to get one of my favorite TTWs songs, "Crossed My Mind" on video which you can check out below. The beginning of the "A-Team" band intro got cut off ... pop culture and upcoming film reference, folks. They closed the night with sing-a-long crowd favorite "Song For Megan."

They've been playing everywhere even doing, if I remember correctly (I'm old and senile!), four shows the following day. Catch these guys when they're in your general vicinity; or heck, take a road trip like to, oh say, Six Flags in Jackson, NJ, July 3 (or any of the other dates that are conveniently listed below) ... roller coasters and rock 'n' roll, sweet. That's Fourth of July weekend, get your party on y'all!

Check out some photos from their set.

Talking To Walls On Tour & Heading To NYC

The Walls are coming, the Walls are coming, hooray, the Walls are coming! No, I haven't lost my mind. Well, I have but, that happened a long time ago!

Talking To Walls, the Connecticut band of rockers, are on tour and coming back to New York. They're going to be everywhere! Here in NYC, the band will grace the Bowery Poetry Club stage on Friday, May 28. Hell fire, they're even playing Six Flags y'all. So go see them ... one show, two shows, all shows! They're an incredibly fun live band.

As you may already know, Talking To Walls released a new album earlier this year. We Were Not So Tall is the bands second full-length record and was produced by Greg Giorgio. It happens to be a stellar piece of work in case you're wondering. The album and band have been getting a good deal of buzz. We Were Not So Tall entered the CMJ College Radio charts, debuting as the #19 most added record in the US & Canada in its first week. I am, by the way, currently in lust with "Crossed My Mind" ... just thought I'd share.

Talking To Walls Celebrate New Record On The LES

Talking To Walls: March 13 @ The Local
269, New York, NY

Talking To Walls recently released their new record, We Were Not So Tall. In celebration, they've taken to the road for their Too Many 'atts Tour. That tour brought them to this city I call home.

Saturday, I went down to The Local 269, during The Great New York Monsoon of 2010, to catch Nat (Webb, guitar/vocals), Matt (Krupa, drums), Matt (Miklos, bass/vocals) and the cat called Brian (Kelly, vocals/guitar) rock out a big set on a tiny stage. A little NYC downpour can't stop good rock 'n' roll! Oh sure, they were soggy but that didn't dampen their spirits. They all seemed to be in exceptionally good moods. When bands have fun on stage, it's contagious. Me being windblown and damp, I needed that contagiousness. It didn't take long to have me smiling and singing along. Lucky for them, they were playing loud enough that they didn't have to hear me singing along off key.

They promised quirky old broads such as myself a good time (without dialing an 800 number or a per minute charge) and that's just what I got. But, I've got a bone to pick with those Walls, they played a wee bit of "Paradise City" ... teases! I'm putting in my request for the full song, complete with one or more of them breaking into the Axl snake dance, the next time they roll through town. Bonus points if bike shorts and a bandana are involved. But, remember guys, I have a camera!

I'd give you a set list but I forgot to get it. Just know they played a fine selection of songs which were all really good ... wish you were here postcard worthy good! I had a great time. Talking To Walls are an incredibly fun band to catch live. If you haven't had the experience, you're missing out on a whole helluva lot of fun.

Talking To Walls To Play The Local 269, 3/13

The good lads known as Talking To Walls are coming to visit us. I like visitors like them. They're cool visitors. They rock out on stage while you toss back drinks unlike you old college buddy Animal who sucks back all the liquor in your house and lists your sofa as his new place of residence. So, New Yorkers, if you're looking for a good time Saturday, March 13, then perhaps you should swing by The Local 269 on the LES and check them out.

In case you didn't know, they have a new record out, We Were Not So Tall. Check it out.

Talking To Walls Rocked A MEAN(Y) Set

Talking To Walls: October 1 @ The Delancey, New York, NY

Talking To Walls made another trip to NY. This time, it was for M.E.A.N.Y. Fest 2009. The last time I saw the band, it was in acoustic duo form. This past Thursday they were electric and the other two walls were in place creating a four-walled Talking To Walls rock 'n' roll extravaganza.

The band, Brian Kelly (vocals/guitar), Nat Webb (guitar/vocals), Matt Krupa (drums) and Matt Miklos (bass) took to the stage to play a shortened but high spirited and engaging set. Since my only live Talking To Walls experience had been acoustic, I was looking forward to seeing the full on, smack you around, plugged in show.

Prior to starting, the band's set had been cut down to four songs. Say wha?! Don't the M.E.A.N.Y. Fest people know old quirky broads need longer Talking To Walls fixes than that? Humph! The show kicked off with "Came To You" and it was clear right away that the band came to have some good old fashioned rock 'n' roll fun.

Y'all know I'm a guitar fan. Well, I got my chance to witness Webb (or "Ace" as they've decided he should be known as to break free from the "at" syndrome that has crept into the band ... can we vote on another name? I'm just askin'!) in all his electric glory. He plays like a bottle of fiery lava ... molten and bubbly. You just know that at any given moment he's going to erupt into a dazzling display of brilliance.

It was my first time having the Krupa experience. I've been paying attention to drummers of late and I'm glad I did Thursday. Krupa is a delightfully charismatic performer and a hell of a drummer. He's all laid back, unassuming and cool looking but when you give a listen you hear all of these fascinating bits and bobs. His rhythm section partner-in-crime, Miklos, who was playing his first official show with the band, provided a solid bottom line that I will henceforth refer to as bassist bad-assery.

Kelly is a personable front man. He has a laid back charm that just makes you wanna bake cookies for him. Okay, perhaps we don't want me personally baking cookies as my culinary skills are a bit rusty and questionable at best on a good day. I discovered at this show that electric, Kelly lets loose. He's a good performer both acoustic and electric but it's like watching two different Brian's. That's not a bad thing, it just offers we the audience diversity. But, me thinks there may well be some rock star wings under the shirt of Electric Brian.

We all know I'm a fan of "Song For Megan." The band was joined by two Irish step dancers for the song which was being filmed for a video they're putting together. I've gotta say, the step dancing solo rocked. That was to be the last song but they got word they could do two more songs. Wicked! This gave us "Cut Out" from their Naked album; a song I was tickled to hear. If you haven't heard it, check it out. They ended the night with a let's party rendition of "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" which was perfect because that's exactly what it felt like, a party.

Talking To Walls are a fun live band and they made me smile a lot. The only thing that could have made it better was if it had been a longer set. I enjoyed them just as much electric as I did acoustic and, I look forward to seeing them again. You should pop around to see them too if they should happen to venture to a venue near you. You'll have fun!

Oh, and my vote for Webb's new name, Hunt Knightly. Is that name already taken? Think about it. I'm just suggestin'!

Talking To Walls To Play M.E.A.N.Y. Fest 2009

Those rockin' lads known as Talking To Walls are coming back to New York! Say wha?! Yes indeed fellow creatures known as New Yorkers, those CT boys are coming back. This time, they'll be taking part in M.E.A.N.Y. Fest 2009 ... that stands for Musicians and Emerging Artists New York ... yeah, I didn't know either. I'm not hip or down or with it or whatever the young whipper snappers are saying these days. They'll be at The Delancey on Thursday, October 1. I hear it's going to be the "greatest, wildest, most legendary show in Talking to Walls history" ... how could you even think about missing that?! They'll be shooting a video with Irish step dancers (really? wicked!) and just in general rockin' out. You should go and show some love or at the very least some highly energetic lust.

And because you won't have gotten enough Talking To Walls, you'll want to go see them when they wreck havoc over at R Bar on Thursday, October 22. Really, you will!

Talking To Walls Take On NYC

Talking To Walls: August 15 @ Desmond's Tavern, New York, NY

Connecticut rockers Talking To Walls came back to New York this past Saturday and I was finally able to witness them! It wasn't the full band with amps on eleven this go 'round though. It was just a couple of the lads, Brian Kelly (vocals, guitar) and Nat Webb (guitar, vocals) doing a intimate, yet lively and extremely fun acoustic set.

For those who haven't experienced Desmond's, it's a small pub, with a small back area for the stage making everything all up in your face personal. That's just perfect for an acoustic set. Up until Saturday, I had only experienced Talking To Walls on record. As a result of seeing them live, I discovered a some things. Well, actually, I didn't just discover this but seeing it live made it stand out more. The first thing, they're really good live ... full of fun and charm. Okay, yeah, the live part I just discovered but the fun and charm bit I already knew about. I've probably mentioned this before but I like when people smile on stage. Well, not random pointless smiles. I enjoy seeing musicians have a good time on stage and when they have genuine smiles, it's infectious. These guys smiled a lot and it was catching.

The second thing, Kelly has an incredibly strong voice with a great tone. I already knew he had a good voice but hearing it up close and acoustic made it more noticeable. You can't hide anything in such an intimate setting. Being so close to musicians and acoustically to boot, gives one a sense of seeing an artist naked to the world. Kelly showed that he can hold his own quite well stripped down for the world to see.

The third thing I discovered, Webb is a hell of a guitar player. I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, QNYC, you're a guitar lovin' chick. How did you not notice this before? I noticed! I knew he was good. But, Webb isn't a flashy, kick you in the teeth, hey look at me, show off type of guitar player. He's a more subtle player. Prior to this show I listened to Talking To Walls as a whole, not breaking it down to individuals. Saturday, I had the opportunity to focus on and experience his pure raw talent and it was a pleasure.

Most of the set consisted of tracks from The Megan EP and the free acoustic EP, A Long Stilt Walk both of which can be found on their website. They kicked off their set with "Walkaway" and ended with a rousing version of "Song For Megan" which you know made me happy as I've raved about this song since I heard it for the first time. Really, if listening to Megan doesn't make you feel good and smile then something's wrong with you. Lucky for all in attendance that I was holding my camera or I may have gotten up and flailed around like a nut, scaring folks and causing overall alarm in the general vicinity of Desmond's. I also have to make mention of the stunning version of "Crossed My Mind" that was done. If I wasn't already a fan of the song, they would have won me over with that performance. This makes my list of songs you must hear live. The other must hear live song that I'm currently diggin' is "New England."

They were joined onstage by their friend Mike Morello (whose set I unfortunately missed) for a brilliantly fun rendition of Poison's "Every Rose Has Its Thorn." This song was particularly fun for me as Brian and I discovered some time ago, via our online communications, that we share similar music tastes ... most of it good, some of it questionable, but, all of it fun to talk about. He's probably one of the few people who knows how truly dorky some of my music collection is. At any rate, Poison and their ilk were a topic of conversation for us at some point so it was terrific to hear that cover.

I know bars have this thing about TV's but it was rather annoying that the staff at Desmond's didn't make sure the volume was turned down when the band hit the stage. Perhaps most bands don't do acoustic sets there so it didn't occur to them, who knows. Morello I believe it was, took matters into his own hands and put America's Most Wanted on mute ... thank you. You'll be happy to know that no one at Desmond's matched the fugitive descriptions that were airing though Kelly did seem a bit nervous for a moment or two until he realized he wasn't being featured ... that episode airs next week. What? You know I couldn't resist having some fun with that! At any rate, I would also like to give thanks to the bartender who trooped downstairs to find me a can of Coke after I decided the ginger ale from the tap tasted off.

Talking To Walls put on a great show. I'm glad I finally had a chance to see them live and I look forward to seeing them again, electric or acoustic. Check them out if you and they are in the same general vicinity or even if they're not. Heck, it's summertime ... take a road trip to see them. You'll have fun ... I did!

Talking To Walls Announce The "Half & Half Tour"

Good news, those CT lads known as Talking To Walls are going on the road again! They've even got a tour name and everything. The Half & Half Tour, snazzy. There's a reason for that particular title though. This tour isn't going to be the full on Talking To Walls assault. These shows will feature half of the band, singer/guitarist Brian Kelly and guitarist Nat Webb, the bands two primary songwriters. The duo are going it alone this time to give fans a stripped down acoustic show. I like acoustic stuff! Does this mean I'll be hearing a rousing acoustic version of "Song For Megan" when I see them? Y'all know I like that song ... a lot! And as luck would have it, or as booking would have it, they're going to swing through NY again! They'll be at Desmond's Tavern on August 15.

Here's a list of their dates. Go check them out if they're playing near you. I have it on good authority you'll enjoy yourselves.
