Mariya May Releases New Album and Video

Today we have for you "Out Walking" from Mariya May. The track is from her new album, Call Me Back If You Can Dig The Music. The album was released May 17 via Ten Dollar Recording Company. You can pick it up HERE.  Check out the video below.

Mariya May’s new album Call Me Back if You Can Dig the Music finds the soulful, Portland based songstress helming a deft concoction of lush neo-soul, rafter-rattling dub reggae, and verdant folk addled adages to love and loss, all shot through with a keen pop sensibility and strident lo-fi attitude.Call Me Back if You Can Dig the Music manages to listen as both vintage and modern at once, familiar and yet fully in its own element. This album is definitely not short on either vision or listenability, and many of the tracks here are well worth some repeat uptake into your earholes. With Mariya’s strong vocal presence and haunting flute lines, the total musical package comes off with an ease and timelessness that is a giddy, memorable listen and yet another great addition to the Ten Dollar Recording Company catalogue.
Backing up Mariya’s vocal, flute, and piano duties herein is her husband and longtime co-collaborator Ryan Michael Block, who produced the album and takes the reins on guitar, bass, and percussion. Peter Qualtere-Burcher’s soulful and omnipresent tenor sax pulls it all together and lends a smoky, jazzy air to a unique record that employs the added dynamic to great effect. Segueing from May and Block’s previous work in What in Your Heart Can Put You in a Trance, May’s recent solo work is at its most soulful and infectious when borrowing from and building on themes established in the couple’s previous project(s), taking their earlier sultry, earthy dub-soul-pop-folk experiments and transposing them to a further level of refinement and easy cool. Add in a generous helping of some serious golden era Motown throwback and the added competence that comes with years of collaborative effort, and you’ve got Call Me Back if You Can Dig the Music, May and Block’s most comprehensive and mature musical expression to date.

Chris Robinson Brotherhood To Release New Album + Single and Tour Dates

The Chris Robinson Brotherhood are scheduled to release their new album on July 26. Anyway You Love, We Know How You Feel is being released via Chris Robinson's Silver Arrow Records.

They recently shared a single from the upcoming album.  You can check out "Narcissus Soaking Wet" below as well as a list of tour dates.

"It was an opportunity to see where our expression could take us. For us, when it comes to making records, the looser it gets the better," says Robinson. "It's all about taking our intuition and following it to where our ideas can really manifest themselves. This turned out to be the most spontaneous record I've ever been a part of."
Indeed, when the Chris Robinson Brotherhood entered the studio to begin recording the album, no one knew just what to expect. These would be the band's first recordings with new drummer Tony Leone (Ollabelle, Levon Helm) and their first time producing themselves. Robinson purposely left as much open-ended as possible. Rather than coming into the studio with a collection of finished songs as he had in the past, he would present the group with sketches—a verse and melody here, a chorus and chord progression there—and let the band follow its collective muse to bring the music to life. They’d lean into the improvisational nature that makes their live shows such enthralling spectacles and thrive on the unexpected.
"All it takes is one good, small idea, and then if everyone's focused and in the moment, a few hours later, you can have something that you realize you'll be playing for as long as you're making music," Robinson continues. "I think when everyone's aware that that's the sort of magic that we're looking for. More than any other session that I've ever been a part of, that's how all of these songs were done."
The album kicks off with "Narcissus Soaking Wet," a psychedelic toe-tapper that marks Robinson's first co-write with keyboardist Adam MacDougall. It touches on everything from Dylan and Parliament Funkadelic to psych rock and Chicago rhythm and blues. "Ain't It Hard But Fair" calls to mind the soulful Americana of The Band, while "Oak Apple Day" is a mediation on life in the CRB, and "Forever As The Moon" came together in a stream of consciousness between The CRB's lead guitarist Neal Casal and Robinson. "Leave My Guitar Alone" was a song Robinson had been sitting on for nearly 15 years, but only once he presented it to the rest of the band did it roar to life in a way that had eluded him for more than a decade. Some of Robinson's finest writing to date arrives in the album's final minutes, with the country-soul, gospel-tinged closer "California Hymn," which finds him singing "Glory glory hallelujah / It's time to spread the news / Though my good words may sound profane to some."
"This band is about being a part of a community, it's our little CRB culture," explains Robinson. "These are our services when we play our music. And when it's at its best, we feel like the music makes a connection with people that's on a level that has nothing to do with commerce or nostalgia. There's some other gravity that keeps us all together in those moments, and it's representative of that kind of magic spell we're chasing."

Beth Orton Releases Video for 1973 + Tour Dates

Beth Orton released the second single from her upcoming album Kidsticks. The album is scheduled to be released on May 27.  The video was created by photographer/director Tierney Gearon. Check it out below.

You can pre-order Kidsticks, HERE.

"As soon as I saw Tierney's work I knew she would be perfect for 'Kidsticks'. I love her use of colour and her layering of images. During the writing of the record I experienced different realities running consecutively. The idea of identity lost and found runs throughout the record. 1973 plays with this idea of memory and reality. There's a surreal nature to Tierney's work that I love, as well as her use of the Californian landscape and light. When Tierney and I met we decided to do the album artwork and also shoot footage too. Not in the way of a pop video but more as she might an art piece. The video has been edited together by Deborah Johnson of Candy Stations, who works a lot with live projections. We plan to build on all the footage Tierney shot over the course of many meetings and make it a part of the live show. I want there to be a thread that runs through the record visually as it does musically." Beth Orton
