The Voxys Rip It To Shreds

The Voxys: July 30 @ Club NME at The Annex, New York, NY

Back in February, four men, Julian Colin Sylvester (guitar/vocals), Trevor Murphy (guitar/vocals), William McCormack (bass) and Chad Flewwelling (drums) better known as The Voxys, took the stage at The Annex. That night they won me over. Well, last Thursday, The Voxys returned to the scene of the crime so to speak. They once again took to the stage at The Annex and put on a killer set!

I am a proud fan of The Voxys. The band hadn't done a show in over four months so when it was announced they would be taking to the stage, I made it a point to be there. One of the things I truly enjoy about The Voxys is their energy. They have this unbelievable raw kinetic energy. From the opening notes, you get caught up in their energy and they don't let go of you until they're finished with you. Seeing The Voxys is like riding a roller coaster ... they're exhilarating, they make you lightheaded, they make you scream ... they make you keep wanting to come back for more. The band overall seemed well rested, relaxed and with enough energy and swagger to take over the world and or at the very least wreck a great deal of good natured havoc.

They kicked off their ten song, forty minute set with a new song, "None Above You." A new song, say wha?! Yep, you heard me, a new song! It seems the band has been busy. They weren't just sitting around twiddling their thumbs during those four months since I last saw them perform. They've been working on new material! As a result, we got not one, but two new songs. The second one and my favorite of the two, "Gypsy Cab" which is a quick paced number with a punk feel to it.

In addition to the new songs they played what has become my favorite song of theirs, "Sunshine At Midnight." I absolutely love that song. It's one of those songs that I can't wait to hear a studio version of. Another favorite of mine, "Wake Up Penelope," was played. If I remember correctly, they debuted this song back in March when I last saw them perform. They also ripped through a take no prisoners version of "Bang Out Of Order" while "Pirates" has taken on a slightly different arrangement.

The Voxys put on a great set. They're more polished than when I last saw them but, they have maintained their delightful mix of jangly Brit pop and raw edgy garage band vibe. They also seemed a bit more confident. They performed with a "we know we're good" confidence. That confidence is a combination of charm and cheek. With most, that would come off as arrogant. With The Voxys, it's simply a statement of fact.

A Bit Of Craic With The Voxys

The Voxys: March 12 @ Mercury Lounge, New York, NY

About a month ago, I informed all that The Voxys gained a new fan, me! Thursday night, I had the pleasure of seeing them perform again. The band, Julian Colin Sylvester (guitar/vocals), Trevor Murphy (guitar/vocals), William McCormack (bass) and Chad Flewwelling (drums) took the Mercury Lounge stage as part of the 2009 Craic Fest. For those that aren't familiar, The Craic Fest is an annual festival that presents a cultural feast of Irish film and music.

I was really looking forward to seeing The Voxys again. There aren't a lot of bands around that inspire that in me. Those that do, well, you read about them here ... like now. The Voxys are a brilliantly fun band. They have a sound that has them knee deep in the waters of raw garage rock. At the same time, they're reminiscent of 60's Brit pop complete with driving jangly guitars and danceable rhythms. At times, you almost expect to see them wearing matching suits and mop tops. Their live energy inspires and encourages you to bop around.

They kicked off their ten song set with "Bang Out of Order." It set the tone perfectly for the rest of the show. The whole set was great. I'd have to say the highlights of the night for me were the Beatlesque "Sunshine At Midnight" and "Wake Up Penelope." My only complaint is I wish they could have played longer!

They left me with a big smile on my face; a smile that saw me home while bobbing my head to remnants of their set, a set that continued playing in my head long after the band had left the stage. Sure, I garnered some strange looks on the train ride home but, I didn't care. I had a head full of The Voxys and that folks isn't a bad thing to have!

15 Questions with The Voxys

Last month, I had the pleasure of seeing The Voxys perform. They put on a fun, energy filled set that won me over. So, with one show under my belt and repeated plays of their EP Bang Out of Order, I decided, as a new admirer of their music, I should find out more about these guys. I sent off a batch of questions to the band, Julian Colin Sylvester (guitar/vocals), Trevor Murphy (guitar/vocals), William McCormack (bass) and Chad Flewwelling (drums) in a bid to satisfy my curiosity. Nice fellas that they are, they agreed to indulge me.

Quirky NY Chick (QNYC): Some of you are from Ireland, am I correct? Who’s from where?

Trevor Murphy (TM): Yep, I'm from Dublin.

Julian Colin Sylvester (JCS): I grew up in a sheep farm in Patagonia. From there to a caravan.

William McCormack (WM): Kildare, Ireland. I have more in common with Julian (sheep) than I do with Trevor.

Chad Flewwelling (CF): I am from Flint Michigan, a long, long way from Ireland.

(QNYC): Tell me a little about the band. How did you come together?

(TM): We first got together in early 2008 when Julian and I bumped into each other in the bar at a really dull gig (the band will remain nameless). We mutually agreed it was time to start a band playing the music we wanted to hear. Shortly after that we made contact with bass player, and fellow Irish man, William. We got stuck into writing songs. Fast forward 6 months, along came drummer Chad. We all hit it off instantly and within a few days of meeting Chad we booked a recording studio and started recording.

The Voxys Gain A New Fan

The Voxys: February 12 @ Club NME at The Annex, New York, NY

I wasn't familiar with The Voxys until a couple of weeks ago. Thus, I had obviously never seen them perform. But, I checked out their music and liked what I heard so I was looking forward to their set. They didn't disappoint me either. The band, Julian Colin Sylvester (guitar/vocals), Trevor Murphy (guitar/vocals), William McCormack (bass) and Chad Flewwelling (drums) put on a fun, energetic set. Their garage rock sound was infused with the perfect amount of jangle pop to keep you dancing along the whole show.

I walked in knowing that as long as they played "Bang Out Of Order" I'd walk away from their set with a smile on my face. Well, they played it and I smiled! I however realized immediately, long before they played that particular song, that I was going to walk away from their set with a smile regardless.

If you happened to have missed the show, you missed a good one. But, fear not, if you're in the New York area, they'll be playing at Mercury Lounge on March 12.

I enjoyed them a lot. Check them out live if you get the chance. You'll have a good time.

For those in need of The Voxys at home, they have a four song EP out titled Bang Out Of Order. An EP isn't nearly enough but it'll hold you over.
