The gents of Talking To Walls are hitting the road starting this weekend for about a weeks worth of shows. And, the best part of all ... they're making a stop in New York on March 7 at Desmond's Tavern!
Hot Seconds: February 12 @ Club NME at The Annex, New York, NY
I dropped by The Annex for Club NME night to see Hot Seconds. This is becoming a habit, cool nights and Hot Seconds on the Lower East Side. It's not a bad habit to have either.
Last month when I went to see them, they whetted my appetite with new songs. I was giddy afterwards and even used the word huzzah. I went to this show looking forward to hearing the new songs again, and hopefully additional ones. What can I say, I'm greedy when it comes to new music! Well, the lads of Hot Seconds, James Love (vocals/guitar/harmonica/tambourine), Eran Westwood (guitar), Marcel Simoneau (keyboards/guitar/megaphone), Bob Toria (bass) and Ian Hudgins (drums) made me a very happy woman.
Once again they rocked "When I Go" and played what has become my favorite Hot Seconds song, "Gone To Ground." The highlight of the night for me was the newest edition to their string of new songs, "Pink Caesar." It's a rocker that gets you up and moving not to mention they got funky in the middle, yeah you heard me, they got funky ... well damn! The added bonus, this song had Love relinquishing his guitar to Simoneau who stepped from behind his keyboards to rock out on guitar. I could actually see him for once! The favorites were played as well as their other new song "Born Again." Their cover of Massive Attack's "Teardrop" was back in the set. They played that back in October the first time I saw them.
They're bad ass and taking over the world one stage at a time. It's time to hoist another flag and declare another stage conquered, this time with the aid of a smoke machine. I had a great time. Hot Seconds are spoiling me with new songs and good shows.
The Voxys: February 12 @ Club NME at The Annex, New York, NY
I wasn't familiar with The Voxys until a couple of weeks ago. Thus, I had obviously never seen them perform. But, I checked out their music and liked what I heard so I was looking forward to their set. They didn't disappoint me either. The band, Julian Colin Sylvester (guitar/vocals), Trevor Murphy (guitar/vocals), William McCormack (bass) and Chad Flewwelling (drums) put on a fun, energetic set. Their garage rock sound was infused with the perfect amount of jangle pop to keep you dancing along the whole show.
I walked in knowing that as long as they played "Bang Out Of Order" I'd walk away from their set with a smile on my face. Well, they played it and I smiled! I however realized immediately, long before they played that particular song, that I was going to walk away from their set with a smile regardless.
If you happened to have missed the show, you missed a good one. But, fear not, if you're in the New York area, they'll be playing at Mercury Lounge on March 12.
I enjoyed them a lot. Check them out live if you get the chance. You'll have a good time.
For those in need of The Voxys at home, they have a four song EP out titled Bang Out Of Order. An EP isn't nearly enough but it'll hold you over.
For vinyl fans, you can pick up "Iamundernodisguise" as 7" vinyl and digital download February 17 and Alpinisms will be available on vinyl February 24. Click the image for more information.
You can also watch their acoustic Live Daily session and download the MP3 of the session ... click the photo!
And if that's not enough School of Seven Bells for you, New York area folks can catch them at (Le) Poisson Rouge with Fujiya & Miyagi on February 17.
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about the upcoming release of Marissa Nadler's Little Hells. You can now have a listen to the full stream of the album which will be released March 3 and more.
There's also a video for "River of Dirt" full of lush scenery.
For those in the New York area, you can catch Nadler on February 27 at Greenpoint Lutheran Church of the Messiah in Brooklyn, March 4 at Joe's Pub and April 25 at Highline Ballroom.
Last year, I became familiar with Talking To Walls when I came across their album Naked, while shopping Amie Street. About a month ago, Brian Kelly (vocals, guitars, keyboards), Nathaniel Webb (guitars, bass, vocals, percussions) and Matt Krupa (drums, vocals) released a new body of nicely crafted work titled The Megan EP.
The five song EP kicks off with the infectious "Song For Megan." I'm not sure whether to call Talking To Walls brilliant or curse them for making a song so catchy I can't get it out of my head! Should I happen to hear this song live, I can envision myself flailing around frightening children, small animals and likely the band. This song alone was worth the price of the record and I couldn't wait to get my hands on it the moment I first heard it. It screams pub sing-a-long. The rest of the record is quite good too. My second favorite song on the record is the acoustic laced "Rollercoaster" which makes me feel like I'm sitting out on the back porch with friends singing songs on a Sunday afternoon.
"Song For Megan" and "Crossed My Mind" are both from the upcoming album We Were Not So Tall. If these two songs are any indication, I'm in for a treat with the rest of the record.
