Photo Gallery: Alex Mallett At Parkside Lounge

Alex Mallett: October 12 @ Parkside Lounge, New York, NY

One man, one banjo ...

After a fun set by Gaz Ellis at Parkside Lounge last night, Alex Mallett took the stage. I was completely unfamiliar with Mallett but was curious. Anyone with a banjo in New York makes me curious. But, fellow native Midwesterner Mallett, cured my curiosity.

Mallett launched into a set of moderately jazzy, country with robust vocals full of charm and laced with a sense of humor. It was an intimate yet lively show. Mallett announced he had learned a new song and went on to play a cover of the Beatles "Help." Okay, so maybe he only kind of learned it but, that didn't matter. It turned into a sing-a-long with the audience cheerfully helping him along. He ended his set with "Baby's Too Busy" giving the audience another chance to sing-a-along with its church revival stomp and clap chorus.

Gaz Ellis At The Parkside Lounge

Gaz Ellis: October 12 @ Parkside Lounge,
New York, NY

Last night, I made my way to the LES to take in a show. The English Gentleman, Gaz Ellis took the stage at Parkside Lounge for a laid back and charming acoustic set. Ellis was supposed to be joined by a piano player who apparently was doing a grand imitation of Houdini. No matter though, Ellis was just fine without the added instrumentation.

I was introduced to Ellis' work when I saw him perform earlier this year at BritFest and was hooked. For those who aren't familiar with this folk delight, check out the clips below from last night's show. Fans of singer/songwriter music should have a listen to this gentle voiced gentleman, he's a delight.

(I really like this song and the funky riff he tosses in there)

Hot Seconds Releases Long Awaited Video

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Hot Seconds unleashes their five minute mini-movie. Gangsters, coppers, brothel's, gambling and trippiness ... oh my!

Sometime last year, I want to say the early part of last year, I heard these words, 'we're going to make another video' or something along those lines. Cool I thought. I like Hot Seconds and was curious to see what they would put together. The words trench coats and fedoras passed through my ears ... so did green screen and bowling ally. June of that year came around, director Marcel Simoneau showed me some bits and pieces of the video on his cell phone. Interesting, I thought. Jump ahead to earlier this year and I hear the words, 'we're almost finished with the video' or something along those lines. There were chuckles about the mustache that's now apparently infamous and has a name, though not credited for its work on guitarist Eran Westwood's upper lip. And then I heard the words it's finished!

Witness for yourself the trench coats, the fedora's, the brothel and some trippy green screen action ... a reaction to some bad moonshine is my nearest guess. Check out "Pieces of You" below. Watch, enjoy, ponder and watch again.

Adam Taylor Plays "Oliver" In His Living Room

Folk rock troubadour Adam Taylor has given his fans a treat! He has posted a video of himself performing "Oliver" in his living room. In the video description, Taylor describes it as a "shotty" version of the song ... whatever you say Adam! At any rate, this is one of my favorite songs to hear live. I found myself singing along ... sadly, I'm no Kate! Y'all know I love Adam's work, check out the video below and experience a slice of brilliant, pure, raw talent.
