Abbe May Pays Homage To Robert Palmer

Abbe May recently released a video for her song, “Perth Girls”.  The Paul Komadina directed video pays homage to Robert Palmer’s classic 80’s video, “Simply Irresistible”.  Where Palmers oft offbeat dancing models perfected the art of vapid cheesiness and unintentional humor, May’s look simply bored.  Bored looking models aside, the homage made a chick, who spent a lot of the 80s ensconced in front of the television watching music videos, smile.  “Perth Girls” is from May’s album Kiss My Apocalypse.  Check out the clip below.

The album was produced by the legendary John Vanderslice (Spoon, The Mountain Goats) at his Tiny Telephone Studio in San Francisco and arranged by the Magik*Magik Orchestra.  Debbie came to John with the nine songs that would comprise the album and together they assembled a “Dream Team” of collaborators to flesh out the songs and their arrangements. The “Dream Team” is an all-star list of San Francisco talent that includes Minna Choi as the arranger/conductor for the Magik*Magik orchestra (Death Cab for Cutie), engineer Ian Pellicci (Deerhoof, The Dodos, Rogue Wave), Jason Slota on drums (Thao with the Get Down Stay Down), and Jesse Cafiero on bass and lap steel guitar (Thao, Sean Hayes). Justine Leichtling plays violin and multi-instrumentalist Sylvain Carton provides a rich tapestry of other sounds. Unravel is a natural evolution in the lush, ethereal, piano driven songwriting of Debbie.

Mount Moriah - “Miracle Temple Holiness”

Mount Moriah released a video for their song “Miracle Temple Holiness” earlier this month.  The clip was directed by Casey Cook. The track can be found on Mount Moriah’s album Miracle Temple which was released back in February.  I love everything about this song...the soulful vocals, the subtle twangy tinge of blues...dare to say, this may be my favorite song of the year.  Check out the video below and enjoy the goodness.

Nova Heart - “My Song 9”

Check out the song “My Song 9” from Chinese band Nova Heart.

If the music planet these days is inhabited by candy colored pop munchkins, ruby red dance floors, and twerking teddy bears, here comes the Wicked Witch of the East.  Staunchly opposed to the oh so technicolored predictable dance tracks that have goo'd and gaga'd the world, a band out of China, yes you heard me, China, has produced an electronic EP finally with a nasty, nasty side to drive fear into the all the denizens of OZ.
This is not for the club, but for the lonely, lonely walk home after a night at the club.  It's music for walking through streets filled with tranny prostitutes (Beautiful Boys) and coming down from lord knows what (My Song 9).  As if emerging from the polluted fog of Beijing, Nova Heart gives you garbled transmissions from an enemy satellite, telling you that for every up there is a down, for every pleasure there is a price.

And this message, like an ominous counterpoint, is filled with sex unfulfilled and builds that lead to a slide into oblivion. Dark analog scenes created by Italian cowboy Rodion are filled to the brim with the siren's call of lead singer Helen Feng that promises both sex and mortality - all at the same time.  Deceptive pop melodies that lead you down the road as if setting you up for the kill before they diverge and you drop down that endless well.

The Torn ACLs - "Way Out"

Check out the latest single, "Way Out", from The Torn ACLs.

Adding to their collection of phenomenal singles and video they have released this year, “Way Out,” contains echoing guitar tones, thumping drums, driving keyboards, and singer William Cremin’s voice create the perfect sugary track. With haunting vocal harmonies heard throughout, the lively track provides a vibrant feeling that will have your ears craving more. The Torn ACLs have a knack for writing polished, energetic indie pop, a sound they have carefully crafted over the years. Their sound is reminiscent of acts such as Ra Ra Riot and Born Ruffians, with the compositional quirks of Islands.
