Q & A With Eric Tessmer

A while back, I was on the Lower East Side, taking in music at a local venue. Two of the bands on the line-up I had experienced previously, the third, I was unfamiliar with.  Upon hearing a few moments of that unfamiliar band, I thought, ‘whoa, who’s that?!’ and took out my camera to document the set. Musically, the band covered the territory that spans between blues rock and face melting.

The band, Austin based trio, Eric Tessmer Band

Recently, I 'e-questioned' guitarist Eric Tessmer. The talented Tessmer has garnered comparison to Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix while carving out his own place on the scene and honing his own sound.  He recently took second place in The Austin Chronicle music poll in the "Best Electric Guitar" category behind Gary Clark, Jr. Yeah, he’s the real deal folks.  Check out our Q & A below.

Quirky NY Chick (QNYC): Tell us a little about yourself.  When did you first start playing?

Eric Tessmer (ET): I'm not really sure when I started, to be honest. My dad plays guitar, my grandma played guitar and apparently a lot of family further back on my dad's side had an affinity for stringed instruments, so it was always around when I was growing up. We used to go to my dad's gigs when I was little. I remember my dad got my older brother a guitar when he was 12, so I would have been 8. My brother wasn't really into it, but I sure thought it was exciting! I think I really realized it was how I identified my feelings and how I wanted to express myself around age 12. My dad took me and my brother to see Pink Floyd that year. David Gilmour could have told me to eat worms and I would have done it, I was obsessed!

The Outfit Release New Single

The Outfit recently released their new single "Caesar".  Check it out.

"We recorded, packaged, and numbered each one individually, using a junky old cassette recorder from the '70s. We chose to release a cassette because it offers a unique quality that you can't get from a digital file. The sound quality is not perfect, but it does have a life of its own. Each tape has its own quirks, affecting the sound of the music in different ways that will gradually change over time, with each pass. You get the digital download so you can have the song as it originally sounds, but with the cassette you also get a version that you can beat up a little, that won't sound exactly like any other version. It was partially inspired by this episode of RadioLab, and partially because we've made our fair share of mixtapes over the years, all full of tape hiss and love,” says bassist Mike King.
The Outfit are Eric Johnston, RJ Powers IV, Mike King, and Mikael Kilates.

Lenka To Release New Album

Australian singer/songwriter Lenka will release her third album Shadows on June 4.  The record is available for pre-sale via a Pledge Music project.  Check out the track "Faster With You" below.

Individuals who pre-order Shadows on PledgeMusic will receive a free instant download of "Faster With You." A portion of these proceeds will go to the charity Save the Children, which promotes children's rights, provides relief and helps support children in developing countries.

Lenka's new record is a highly personal collection of songs, penned while she was pregnant with her first child.
"I felt very free going into making this album. It was a solo mission, on my terms, my time, my choices," says Lenka. "Previously my music was focused on being uplifting and energizing. For this album, I shifted to create a lullaby soundtrack for myself, my child and everyone out there. I have always loved albums that one can fall asleep to; an experience I enjoyed a lot growing up. Those songs drift into your unconscious like no others."
