Either way, you'll get the chance this summer.  They're hitting the road and will make a stop in New York at The Bowery Ballroom on Friday, August 15.  Doors are at 8PM; 18+. What You May Have Missed: Red Wanting Blue at Mercury Lounge

Red Wanting Blue: June 17 @ Mercury L
ounge, New York, NY

Friday night I once again had the chance to catch Red Wanting Blue. They're a amazingly fun band oozing with talent. I believe I mentioned before, that they really should be on your list of bands to see if you haven't done so already. Anyone who appreciates musicianship will appreciate them and their blend of Americana and classic rock. They also have a real positive vibe about them.

As wonderful as the band is, I would be remiss in not mentioning their fans. While watching Red Wanting Blue would be enjoyable by itself, you wouldn't get the full picture without being surrounded by a venue full of their loyal and very vocal fans. Front-man Scott Terry commented at the beginning of the set that he saw a lot of familiar faces and 'some of y'all are out of your zip codes.' Whether it was the bird flipping "Finger In The Air" or singing along with the contagiously fun "You Are My Las Vegas" the audience was right there with them. They may well be the only band I've ever seen, that's not an "oldies" act, where every song they play seems to be a crowd favorite! That says a lot about them, their talent, their songs and their fans.

At the end of it all the audience wanted more. The gentleman next to me didn't just want more, he wanted a second set. Nobody would have complained ... well maybe the bands that were to take the stage after them!

This is what they played...

This is what it looked like...

Red Wanting Blue Documented On Film

Ohio rock band, Red Wanting Blue have been around for more than fourteen years. With talent to spare and an amazing drive; they've released eight albums and have built up a loyal fan base. They are quite simply one of those amazing unsigned bands that hasn't let lack of a record deal stop them from doing what they do so well. It has been a long haul and you've got to give mad props to them for not calling it quits. Many bands get tired of chasing the dream after a few years and settle down to a stationary life or they disband and the members move onto other bands.

Director and producer Ken Davenport followed the tenacious band while they made their eighth self-produced album and took to the road. What resulted was These Magnificent Miles: On The Long Road With Red Wanting Blue. Through interviews and never-before-seen concert footage, we get to see the reality of a hard-working indie band. Anyone who has seen the band perform is gifted with a terrific and passionate show. If you've ever had the pleasure to speak with them, even if for just a few moments, you realize instantly that they're down-to-Earth, dedicated and appreciative of their fans. Anyone interested in experiencing the life of a grassroots indie band will surely want to check this documentary out. And if by chance you haven't seen Red Wanting Blue live, do yourself a favor and go see them. You won't regret it.

Upcoming Shows: Marina V, Jump Into The Gospel & More

New York area friends and folks in general, it's time for another upcoming shows alert.

Saturday, September 11, A Million Years will be at The Studio at Webster Hall. Doors are at 8PM and tix are $10 in advance and $12 at the door.

Monday, September 13, Russian songbird Marina V will be in New York! She'll be on the LES at Rockwood Music Hall. It's a FREE gig so you have no excuses not to swing by, say hi to her and her musical partner Nick (they're just the sweetest) and hear some good music. Get there early, she goes on at 6PM.

Shwa and The Good Times are spending every Tuesday in September at Rockwood Music Hall. If you missed them this Tuesday, then be sure to catch them next week, September 14. They go on at 8PM. And, another, no excuses gig, it's FREE! They have one of the worlds catchiest songs, "Penultimate Dance" and a song that stayed on repeat for a good while "Sandy Don't Worry."

Monday's are a good night to check out music. September 20, New York's Jump Into The Gospel (pictured) will be at Mercury Lounge. It's 10 at 10 ... $10 at 10PM. Check them out. They won me over when I happened to catch them back in February.

Also on Monday, September 20, Sharon Little will be on the LES as well. She'll be at Rockwood Music Hall on Stage 2. She's on early, 7:30PM and it'll cost you $10. I became a fan of her music when I came across her first album on Amie Street a couple of years ago. Her EP, First Cut is available on her official website but will be released the following day, 9/21 via digital outlets. It's a sneak peek of her upcoming second album Paper Doll which will be released early next year.

Need something to do Tuesday, September 21? Well, head on over to Mercury Lounge and catch Red Wanting Blue. They're on at 8:30PM and it'll cost you $10. They put on a hell of a live show. Buy your tickets now, I think they sold out the last time they were there. You don't want to get left at the door looking all sad eyed and pitiful because you couldn't get in.

Check with venues as times can be subject to change.

Photo Review: Red Wanting Blue At Mercury Lounge

Red Wanting Blue: July 8 @ Mercury Lounge, New York, NY

Last week, I swung by Mercury Lounge to see a band I dig. At some point during the evening, while standing in front of a list of upcoming shows, I had this titillating (paraphrased) conversation with my favorite drummer ...

Favorite Drummer (FD): See that band there (pointing to the upcoming show list), Red Wanting Blue? You should check them out.

Me: Yeah?

FD: Yeah.

Me: Are they good?

FD: Yeah, they're good. They've got a good drummer. I taught him drum stuff.

Me: Really? As good as you?

FD: Oh yeah, he's real good. You should check them out.

Me: Maybe I will.

I filed that conversation in the back of my head. Nearly a week later, I'm sitting at my desk thinking to myself, what was that band I should check out? Wasn't it this week they're playing?

Come Thursday night, I went around to Mercury Lounge to check out Red Wanting Blue. Because I'm basically lazy, I mean busy with work and stuff, I didn't check their music out prior to going to the show. I just went in blind. So, I wasn't really sure what to expect.

The band, Scott Terry (vocals/guitar), Eric Hall (guitar/lap steel/vocals), Mark McCullough (bass/chapman stick/vocals), Dean Anshutz (drums/percussion/washboard) and Greg Rahm (guitar/keyboard/vocals) began setting up after Honor By August, who played before them, cleared off. They unpacked suitcases and plastic storage bins. They set up lamps and hung up a giant flag and lighted owls. A soap box was put into place. I love a good soap box. None of this gave me a clue to how they would sound but it was all fascinating to watch. I looked around and noticed that it had gotten pretty crowded in the room.

While I was watching them set up, I thought to myself that I was probably going to get a good show. My suspicions were right. Red Wanting Blue began to play. Good gosh, were they on point. We're talking some seriously high caliber musicians folks. One song in and I was hooked. They proceeded to blow me away song by song. Are these guys wildly massive yet? They should be if they aren't. The band owned the stage and the audience, who were loud and enthusiastic. I think I might have even squealed a little when they broke out the washboard center stage. When's the last time you had a washboard all up in your face people?! Sorry, stuff like that gets me excited. They're a tremendously fun band to watch perform. I'm not sure how to describe their sound ... rock, alt-country ... how about we tag it just plain good.

Red Wanting Blue makes my list of bands you should see live. The gentlemen from Ohio rocked NYC and we thank you. I'm glad I took that drummers advice and checked them out!
