Talking To Walls To Play The Local 269, 3/13

The good lads known as Talking To Walls are coming to visit us. I like visitors like them. They're cool visitors. They rock out on stage while you toss back drinks unlike you old college buddy Animal who sucks back all the liquor in your house and lists your sofa as his new place of residence. So, New Yorkers, if you're looking for a good time Saturday, March 13, then perhaps you should swing by The Local 269 on the LES and check them out.

In case you didn't know, they have a new record out, We Were Not So Tall. Check it out.

Doppelgänger Rock 'n' F'in Rolled

Doppelgänger: March 4 @ John Varvato
s Store on Bowery, New York, NY

Back in January, I dropped by a club to check out some live music. I didn’t go to see anyone particular I just went to have fun. That was the night I experienced Doppelgänger.

Having experienced the band, I happily hopped on the train and headed down to John Varvatos’ store on Bowery, the former spot of the legendary CBGB’s. Doppelgänger is a minimal two man set up, Ryan (drums/vocals) and Rob (guitar). They’re loud, they’re raw and they rock.

I am officially, completely and totally in lust with them. The minute they start to play you get a shivering tingly feeling. It’s similar to the feeling I got as a kid when I discovered my mom’s Goat’s Head Soup album. I’d open up that album, see the cardboard flat of the goat head in the soup, squeal and run off feeling all tingly with chills. But, I kept going back to look at it. It excited me. Minus the running off part, that’s the feeling I get with Doppelgänger.

They have an EP that’s coming out, I believe, this month. It’s titled Get It Over With Already. Keep and eye out for that. I’m looking forward to getting my quirky little hands on it.

Should they be playing and you’re in the general vicinity, you should go see them. As a matter of fact, if you're in the New York area, they’ll be at Glasslands Gallery in Brooklyn on March 18, go check ‘em out.

My camera sound doesn’t do them justice…

Tuesday, March 30, Killola will be playing The Studio at Webster Hall. Y'all know I'm in lust with Killola. How could I not be, right? Well, also on the bill that night will be Sick of Sarah. To celebrate the upcoming show, I decided to show a little Sick of Sarah love. Check out their video for "Paint Like That" below. It was directed/animated by Jodi Sandler.

And... in case you missed it when it was posted the last time (even if you didn't miss it and have seen it a hundred times) ... check out Killola's video for "Cracks In The Armor." It was directed by Hank Friedmann. If you haven't already picked up tickets for one of their shows, you should ... guaranteed fun. They're hella good live. Ooh, I said "hella" ... wow.

Video: Hanne Hukkelberg - "Bandy Riddles"

The folks at Extraneous Noise record live multi-camera footage of indie artists that play in the Boston area. They did a video of Hanne Hukkelberg when she played a gig at Cambridge club T.T. the Bear's Place last month. Check out the resulting video for "Bandy Riddles" below.

Jennie Arnau To Release New Record 4/13

On April 13, Jennie Arnau will release Chasing Giants, the follow up to her 2007 record Mt. Pleasant. You can check out "Bouncing Ball" from the record in the MP3 Grab below. And, that's not all. New Yorkers, you can catch Arnau when she takes up residence at The National Underground on March 10 & 24 and April 14 & 28.

Determined to find a producer who would understand her alchemy of grassroots Americana and indie rock, Jennie enlisted the help of Trina Shoemaker (Sheryl Crow, Queens of the Stone Age, Emmylou Harris). The two, along with recording engineer Phil Palazzolo (Neko Case, The New Pornographers), quickly began work on CHASING GIANTS.

“It sounds strange,” says Jennie, “but when
I went into the studio with Trina, I really didn’t know my voice. But she showed me that I knew my music better than anyone and that I had a clear vision. I learned a lot and she gave me the confidence I needed to make this album.”

Q&A: 15 Questions With Jihae

Hypnotic, melodic, edgy, poetic, New York based songstress Jihae is currently in the studio working on her new record, Fire Burning Rain. The record is scheduled for release in July. But, I had the opportunity to send some questions over to her and the following is the results of my query.

(QNYC) - How would you describe your sound to those who may be unfamiliar with your work?

(Jihae) - Electro-Rock with a dash of avant garde, pop and punk in a singer/songwriter spirit.

(QNYC) - You're currently working on your upcoming record, Fire Burning Rain. What can we expect from this record? How will it differ from your previous works?

(Jihae) - Every time I make an album I try to deliver something new. My Heart is an Elephant is an eclectic album and Elvis is Still Alive is more of a rock album with some songs that are a bit more experimental. Fire Burning Rain is a cleaner or more balanced marriage between both pop rock and experimental.

Video: The Heavy At 92YTribeca On Baeblemusic

I told you a while back that after waiting for over a year to see The Heavy again, I got sick and couldn't go to the concert. Well, that show was filmed and is being shown on Baeblemusic.com. Wicked! Check out the teaser below.

Site Changes

If you've dropped by my little corner of the blog world for a visit then you may have noticed last weekend I started making some changes. Yep, this old chick gave herself a bit of a facelift. As with all good face work, the changes haven't been drastic, just a little nip here and tuck there.

A gal learns a lot when diving in head first without any knowledge of web design. So, it has all been a trial and error process and now, I'm peeling the bandages off little by little. If you've had a look around then you may have noticed there is now a separate page for additional MP3's. Most of the songs on the MP3 Grab page haven't appeared on the site before. I've also given my interviews their own little archive section. New interviews are in the works so keep an eye out. The list of tags are now in a pull down menu instead of that big ol' giant list that was taking up way too much space along the side of the page.

In the mist of my facelift I've "broken" some things! All of the streaming media that is hosted by me isn't working at the moment. Those will be fixed soon. And, while I backed up my site before making changes, I still managed to screw up things! Memo to me and any other do-it-yourself designers, make sure when you're making changes you haven't accidentally opened your back-up file. As a result, I lost my blog roll. Thank goodness that's the only thing I lost! I've added back what I could remember but if we've done a mutual link exchange and your blog isn't listed, let me know. The oversight wasn't intentional.

My facelift is still a work in process so there will be additional tweaks. But, if you hear an anguished scream and what sounds like a head banging against a desk, that'll be me having some mini-design disaster.

Cheers,

Quirky NY Chick
