What You May Have Missed: The Broadcast at Mercury Lounge

The Broadcast: October 8 @ Mercury Loung
e, New York, NY

When last I saw The Broadcast perform, it was at Mercury Lounge, they were still New Yorkers and they were rockin' a filled audience with earthy soul based music. Since then, they've left NY for Asheville, NC to do the full-time musician thing and released a new record, Days Like Dreams. I had a chance to catch The Broadcast, once again at Mercury Lounge. It's been two years since I've seen them. Excuse me, what? How did that happen? I need to get out more!

The band took the stage to an enthusiastic audience. Front-woman Caitlin Krisko has gone from soulful bohemian to rockin' soul. The band launched into a set that had the audience cheering them, singing a-long and dancing. You can't help but feel good at one of their shows. One of the first things I noticed was that their sound has gotten edgier, more funky. They sound more Memphis soul now. Krisko, in a pink and purple shimmy dress, started out in platform pumps which gave way to bare feet, all the better for dancing which she does a lot of. She has gained a richness to her voice allowing for a deeper sexier sound.

While Krisko has killer pipes, she is surrounded by suburb band-mates that you have to see live to fully appreciate. The tight rhythm section, Rich Brownstein (keyboards), Matthew Davis (bass), Tyler Housholder (percussion) and Michael Davis (drums) cook with gas. If they can't make you dance then, well, you probably have issues you need to deal with. Y'all know I'm a guitar fan and well, the new face on stage (new to me!), guitarist Aaron Austin was scorching. The dude tore it up...damn. They play the small stage like they're playing an arena. They play it with lots of energy, sweat, passion and heart filling the room like they know we're not promised tomorrow so they give it all they've got.

Check out the video footage at the bottom of the post for a taste of what you may have missed. Oh, and please excuse the dodgy camera audio!

Caitlin Krisko & The Broadcast's Over The Undercover

At the end of May, I went to see Caitlin Krisko & The Broadcast perform. It was a show I was looking forward to based on having heard their new full length debut record Over The Undercover which is scheduled for digital release on June 15. The record is a nice slice of Sunday afternoon back porch and sweet tea soul with dashes of pop and folk blended in.

I've been listening to Over The Undercover for about a month or so now. The first thing that catches you is the voice of Caitlin Krisko. She has a rich soulful instrument that goes from sultry to vulnerable and back again with ease. Krisko reaches down in her soul and comes up a grand amount of passion that sucks the listener in. With every inflection, be it subtle or blistering, she makes the listener feel all of the pain and pleasure of each song.

Krisko, who wrote/co-wrote all ten songs on Over The Undercover proves she's not just a good singer but also a good songwriter. She dishes up acoustic based fiery soul as is the case with "Little Release" and "Exactly Like Today." The powerful "Pull The Trigger" takes on a bluesy R&B stance and Krisko lays it all out there for the world to see, raw and open. At the same time, she proves capable of delicate piano driven pop leanings with the stunning "Let In Love" one of the two songs on the album co-written with The Broadcast's keyboard player Rich Brownstein.

The first time I listened to "The Unintelligible Truth," I thought to myself, this is one hell of a song with it's sweet toned guitar solo. Krisko and her band The Broadcast opened their show with this song when I saw them and nailed it all up to the wall leaving me with one of those "DAMN!" moments that you get when you've just been smacked by something good. Since then, this song has moved to the top of my list of favorites.

Krisko, with The Broadcast, Brownstein, Nick Coolidge (bass), Michael W. Davis (drums), Tyler Householder (percussion) and Dave Rosenthal (guitar) have put together ten ear pleasing tracks. Over The Undercover is one of those records that you can't really pick out just one standout song on. Some records you like a song or two and after the first few times, you don't really listen to the album as a whole. This is not one of those records. While each track stands well alone, Over The Undercover is a record that can be fully appreciated as a whole without hitting the skip button on any songs.

Caitlin Krisko & The Broadcast Partied At Mercury Lounge

Caitlin Krisko & The Broadcast: May 30 @ Mercury Lounge, New York, NY

Caitlin Krisko & The Broadcast threw a party, a record release party that is, for their new record Over The Undercover. I ask you, who can resist a good party? No one? So, I went over to Mercury Lounge where said party was taking place to enjoy a night music.

This was my first time seeing Caitlin Krisko & The Broadcast perform. I went in expecting a good show based on what I'd heard on Over The Undercover. And, that's exactly what I got. Krisko, in a long flowing dress, kicked off her sandals, took to the stage barefoot and proceeded to belt out the fiery opening number, "The Unintelligible Truth." What a way to kick off a show. My first thought was, why is this the first time I've seen this woman perform?! It was clear from the beginning that Krisko held the crowd in the palm of her hand and she wasn't letting go until she was finished with us. Oh sure, she gave us enough room to breath and dance but we were her captives, possibly the happiest bunch of captives I've ever witnessed.

From the opening number to the closing, a smiling and oft times dancing Krisko led her band through a soulful romp that kept the crowd cheering loudly. You really have to see Krisko perform live to get the complete picture. One moment she's sweet girl next door charming, the next, she's an intoxicating goddess and at times mixing the two for a dizzying combination. On record, her talents shine through but it's more laid back, more of a sexy laze around on a Sunday afternoon with your lover kind of thing. Live, she belts out some serious folk based soul that makes you yell out "go on girl!" The woman, quite simply, sang her ass off. The Broadcast, Dave Rosenthal (electric guitar/backup vocals), Nic Coolidge (bass guitar/backup vocals), Rich Brownstein (keys), Michael W. Davis (drums) and Tyler Householder (percussion) provided a solid and for the most part subtle, but fun foundation. They were joined by horns, a sax player and a trombone player, for a couple of songs that kicked things into full party mode. But, shame on me, I forgot to make note of the horn section names! Hey, I was having fun, you can't expect me to be detailed and professional while having so much fun!

If you weren't at the show and didn't have a chance to get Over The Undercover, fear not, it will be released digitally on June 15 but I'll tell you more about the record another day. In the meantime, if Caitlin Krisko & The Broadcast are playing near you, go check them out. They throw one hell of a party!
