Lenka To Release New Album

Australian singer/songwriter Lenka will release her third album Shadows on June 4.  The record is available for pre-sale via a Pledge Music project.  Check out the track "Faster With You" below.

Individuals who pre-order Shadows on PledgeMusic will receive a free instant download of "Faster With You." A portion of these proceeds will go to the charity Save the Children, which promotes children's rights, provides relief and helps support children in developing countries.

Lenka's new record is a highly personal collection of songs, penned while she was pregnant with her first child.
"I felt very free going into making this album. It was a solo mission, on my terms, my time, my choices," says Lenka. "Previously my music was focused on being uplifting and energizing. For this album, I shifted to create a lullaby soundtrack for myself, my child and everyone out there. I have always loved albums that one can fall asleep to; an experience I enjoyed a lot growing up. Those songs drift into your unconscious like no others."

Sister Canyon To Release New EP In April

Sister Canyon is scheduled to release their EP Cynic on April 16 via Fake Four Inc.  Check out the single "Floating Heads" below.
An off and on recluse, Terra Lopez spent countless hours in her Northern California bedroom each day, recording hundreds of gritty, personal demos with her classical guitar and MPC. Staring at the ceiling of her apartment, she taught herself how to sing by studying vocalists Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Jeff Buckley. It was during this time that Lopez started to form the sound and scope of what would become Sister Crayon. Shortly after, Lopez met Dani Fernandez and the two bonded over hip-hop and the MPC. Inseparable, the duo started collaborating and word spread quickly about Sister Crayon on the West Coast. Over the years, the project has undergone numerous lineup changes and been bolstered by the addition of live keys and drums. With drummer Omar Barajas in the mix, Sister Crayon’s live show is passionate, dynamic and emotionally resonant.

While recording, Blum’s talents as a professional chef took him all around the state of Texas as he would cook to supplement his touring income. Doing so kept winning him new friends and supporters.  He’s cooked for David Byrne and Norah Jones and even hosted a BBQ for Ian MacLagan and 100 friends for his 66th birthday party, right after his induction into the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame.  As Jason observes, “I’d cook a meal for people and then get out my guitar and play them some songs.”

Nora Jane Struthers & The Party Line will release their album Carnival on April 16.
“When you go to a carnival, you go into a sideshow tent, and on every stage you find a different person with a different story,” says Nora Jane Struthers. “That’s why I’m trying to do with this album – craft vignettes, and in some cases more developed narratives, about imaginary people’s lives.” Struthers’ album Carnival, which will be issued on the singer-songwriter’s own label on April 16th, is an ambitious and literate follow-up to the Nashville performer’s much-praised 2010 solo debut.

Produced by Brent Truitt (Dolly Parton, Alison Krauss, Dixie Chicks), who also helmed Struthers’ self-titled bow, Carnival comprises 14 fresh original compositions in her “Classic Americana” vein that richly show off her skills as a sensitive and intelligent tune-weaver and a warm and persuasive vocalist. Recorded at Truitt’s East Nashville studio, the album marks the recording debut of Struthers’ touring band the Party Line. The gifted group of instrumentalists includes Struthers’ longtime collaborator P. J. George, Joe Overton, Aaron Jonah Lewis and Drew Lawhorn.

The Knife Release Video for "A Tooth For An Eye"

The Knife released a video for their track "A Tooth For An Eye" last week.  The track, available today, is from their upcoming album Shaking The Habitual which is scheduled for release on April 9.  The video was directed by Roxy Farhat and Kakan Hermansson.  Check it out below.
“A Tooth For An Eye” deconstructs images of maleness, power and leadership, Who are the people we trust as our leaders and why? What do we have to learn from those we consider inferior?

In a sport setting where one would traditionally consider a group of men as powerful and in charge, an unexpected leader emerges. A child enters and allows the men to let go of their hierarchies, machismo and fear of intimacy, as they follow her into a dance. Their lack of expertise and vulnerability shines through as they perform the choreography.

Amateurs and skilled dancers alike express joy and a sense of freedom; there is no prestige in their performance.

Highasakite inhabits their own rare musical landscape, a place of long dark shadows, sudden flashes of glittering light, brooding silences and unexpected explosions of fierce percussion. Ingrid HÃ¥vik’s surrealistic lyrics and ardent vocals float out of another time and place, drawing you down into the breathless maelstrom created by her band mates. Progressive rock, Norwegian folk music, jazzy tribal drumming, spaced out synthesizers, zither and autoharp come together to create a deep, mysterious resonance, echoing the sounds your hear in the midnight dreams that often seem more real than anything you experience during your waking hours. Imagine Phil Spector producing Cluster, with a dash of Radiohead on the side, and you’ll have the general idea, but Highasakite brings their own singular vision to the party.

The band took flight when HÃ¥vik and drummer Trond Bersu met while studying jazz at the Trondheim Jazz Conservatory. They started as a duo, with Bersu on drums and HÃ¥vik singing and playing zither. After a few gigs, they enlisted producer Thomas Dahl (Krøyt) to help them capture the sounds they were hearing in their heads. “We wanted to combine the rhythm patterns I was composing with 60s American pop, Norwegian folk music and synthesizers,” Bersu says. With Dahl producing and playing bass and guitar, and their friend Øystein Skar contributing his synthesizer wizardry, they worked for six months to produce a collection of songs cryptically titled All that floats will rain. This was an immediate success and Highasakite was named the best new act of 2012 by many Norwegian magazines and newspapers.

With their reputation in Norway secure, Highasakite is setting their sights on the American market with In and out of weeks. The five-song mini-album will introduce America to the band’s highly emotional music and their distinctive approach to songwriting and arranging. Tribal drums and throbbing, euphoric synthesizer open “Son of a Bitch,” a mid tempo rocker that alternates between HÃ¥vik’s propulsive, tongue twisting verses and wordless trills, underscored by Dahl’s swooping bass. “In and out of weeks” is a tense, moody ballad full of long sustained guitar notes, vast washes of spacey keyboards and dense layers of skittering percussion. HÃ¥vik’s somnambulant vocals capture the muzzy feeling of a sleepless night.

Miss Guy Releases Groovy New Video

It's no secret that we like Miss Guy here at QNYC. He's one of our music crushes.  Well, he's back with a brand new video.  The clip is for the track "Magic" from his Dumb Blonde EP.

"Magic" has that 70's pop, feel good, vibe going on. It's the kind of song that would have had little bell-bottomed girls squealing, "he's so dreamy!"  The video follows suit with bright groovy graphics. The whole thing just inspires me to smile.  I'm not sure if it's the bright and colorful nod to my time in front of the television as a child or if I just want to smile back at Miss Guy's smiling disembodied head.  Check out the clip below.

Directed by B. G. Kuchta
Song by Barbara Jean Morrison, Charles W. Nieland, and Miss Guy
