It's Our Anniversary!

On this day in 2008, in the wee hours of the morning, I got a crazy notion; start a blog! And, Quirky NY Chick was born! I had no clue what I was doing. I still don't! Would anyone other than me ever see it? Would I get bored after a few months and quit? Well, here it is 2016 and I'm still in my tiny corner of the internet. I never thought this little thing of mine would still be around eight years later.

In my time here, I've been to some great shows, heard some great music and seen some great performances. I've photographed some great artists. I've met some great people. I've learned that blogging is incredibly time consuming. There have been times when I've considered not doing it any longer...not posting as often as I probably should. But then, I tell myself, 'you can't quit...you put a lot of time into this' so I keep on chugging along.

Thank you to those that have visited my quirky little world. Thank you to the artists and their reps for providing me with loads of great stuff to post about. Here's to another year...cheers!

Goodbye 2015, Hello 2016

Another year has come and gone. Goodbye, 2015! Hello, 2016!

Looking back, I realize I really haven't spent much time in my little corner of the internet this year. It seems I spent more time just enjoying the simple pleasure of tossing records onto my turntable than blogging about the music.  I'm not sure what the new year will bring to my little blog. Beyond wacky musings and a fascination for whatever wonderful bit of music grabs my attention who knows what the new year will be like here at QNYC. Whatever it brings, I look forward to it!

As for music in 2015... I enjoyed James Bay's Chaos and the Calm. Dodge and Burn from The Dead Weather was a nice bit of work, my favorite of their albums...the track "Impossible Winner", so superb. Re-issues, I picked up the massive, gigantic, super duper, jumbo, deluxe box set of Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti...beautiful packaging on that one. On the flip side, the reissue of The Black Crowes first four albums saw the light of day on vinyl (finally)...they have ridiculous packaging. I could do just as well with card stock and a color copier at home. No effort whatsoever was put into them. At least they sound decent. My inner 12 year old is sad, Motley Crue have called it quits with their last show ever tonight. Who knew they would last, what, 34 years?! I really hope they stick to their ending. A lot of musicians left us this year. Two musical losses made me particularly sad, the legendary B.B. King left us in May. He was someone I grew up listening to with my grandparents, my mom, whose music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. And, just days ago, we lost Ian Kilmister, known to the world as Lemmy, leader of Motörhead, they played rock 'n' roll.

Be safe. Be happy. And, may the new year bring you everything you need and allows you to indulge in what want. See you in 2016!

Love Crushed Velvet - “It’s A Holiday, Come Over!”

So, I’m not big on holiday songs but a few have landed in my inbox lately.  So, tis the season to share!

Love Crushed Velvet released an animated video that chronicles a reindeer alone during the holidays and missing his woman.  How could I not like this video?!  Check it out below.

Love Crushed Velvet released their EP Delusions in September.

The highly anticipated release of Delusions cemented the band's place in the world of dark, melodic rock. Driven by lead singer/songwriter A.L.X., Love Crushed Velvet shows off exceptional emotional and stylistic range in lyric and musicality. Reminiscent of the glory days of rock and roll, Love Crushed Velvet has carved out a unique place in today's music world, paying homage to the past while remaining firmly grounded in the present.

Delusions is a powerful force that touches upon the complications of love, fame and our global society. The EP begins right at the apex, with its premiere single "Revolution Time", capturing an unyielding spirit of upheaval inspired by the personal experiences and perspective of A.L.X.. Love Crushed Velvet maintains the unwavering strength of a revolution high throughout the entirety of Delusions.

Holy Cow, We're 5 Years Old Today!

Five years ago, in the wee hours of the morning, I got a crazy notion to start a blog.  Given my propensity to procrastinate, get bored and in general lose interest in things, I didn't expect to have a first anniversary let alone a fifth anniversary!

So, yay QNYC!  Happy anniversary to me.  This calls for cake and booze and music and cute men folk...perhaps not in that order.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed in some way to keeping my little corner of the blog world alive.

And, for the record, I'm still quirky...oh, and still female!

Cheers,

Holiday Treats: Miss Guy Dishes Up A Merry Effin' Christmas

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that Miss Guy has a Christmas song.  Today, we have for you, the video.  I'm not one for the, oh shall we say, traditional fair that is dished up this time of year.  So, of course, I found myself giving "Merry Effin' Christmas" more than a few spins.  How could I not?  It's good ol' cheeky fun!  I caution you though, it's not quite safe for work, unless you work in my office where it's on the holiday music playlist that's blasting away as I work.  Check out the video below.

“Merry Effin’ Christmas” is a satirical take on traditional Christmas music with a rock twist. The video features Miss Guy, Matt Katz-Bohen, and Monkey (the King Charles Cavalier Spaniel) in all of their holiday garb and glory. With winter scenes of excess and holiday decorations galore, “Merry Effin’ Christmas” even has a “hot” Santa that is not to be missed.

Miss Guy Releases New Video & Dishes Up A Christmas Song

A few weeks ago, Miss Guy released a new video.  It's for the song "Take It Off" from his Dumb Blonde EP.  It's a fun shake your booty kind of song.

I put off watching it because of this, "WARNING: Video contains STROBE EFFECT which may cause seizures."  I'm not prone to seizures but, the whole strobe thing is a migraine trigger for me.  But, I decided to give it a go.  About thirty-three seconds in I was forced to stop watching because my eyes started hurting ... a warning sign that one of those horrid migraines I get was about to be triggered.  At any rate, I love you Miss Guy...wish I could watch your video.

Check out the video below.  The song can be streamed HERE, for those who may not be able to watch it.

For those who dig holiday music, you can add "Merry Effin' Christmas" to your holiday playlists ... or the censored version, for those of you who have more delicate ears, can be found HERE.

Holiday Cheer From Adam Taylor & Band

It's the holiday season which means, it's time for holiday music! Personally, I'm not all that big on the traditional old classics or the cheesy junk that people insist on playing. So, when I come across a new holiday song that isn't cheesy I get a little giddy. Who has made me giddy you ask? Adam Taylor, that's who. Adam and his band, Kate Young, Jason Hoffheins and Mike Giblin have given us "Mrs. Mistletoe." Check out the video below and head on over to Taylor's website (HERE) to get a free download of the song.

Oh, and on this day two years ago, Taylor released his debut EP, Play The Piano Drunk. Happy anniversary! Here's to many more years of good music. If you haven't added this record to your collection, what are you waiting for? It makes a good stocking stuffer! Time sure flies ... it was two years and five days that I first saw Taylor & Young perform and they just keep getting better.

Happy Anniversary Quirky NY Chick!

Another year has come and gone in my quirky little world. No, it's not the new year yet. It's our anniversary! Two years ago, in the wee hours of the morn, I decided a blog sounded like a good idea. And thus, QuirkyNYChick.com was born!

Over the two years, I've met some great people, heard a lot of great music and in general, I've had a bang up good time. I look forward to many more years of the same.

Cheers!

Yule A Go-Go

When I first saw Yule A Go-Go, my first thought was, after giggling for a moment and thinking all holiday parties should have this (okay, maybe not the party thrown by your great aunt Odessa), "somebody's going to hell!" Because, that's what you say when you run across fun stuff that some folks might consider questionable. And, burlesque dancing in celebration of a religious holiday is well, one of those things that could be considered questionable.

What exactly is Yule A Go-Go you ask? Well, it's a DVD (plus 12 song CD) of 13 chicks doing burlesque (PG-13 rated pasties & g-string sort of stuff) to newly recorded versions of holiday classics in front of the Yule Log. I don't know if this is something other parts of the country air, but, if you're in NY, Channel 11 has a tradition. They air an image of a crackling fireplace while playing holiday music for several hours. Well, Yule A Go-Go is the grown folks version of that.

The DVD comes with a bevy of features including continuous party loop (after several glasses of your drunken uncle's special eggnog nobody will be able to control the replay button on the remote so you gotta let it loop) and the fireplace only option ... that option is for when great aunt Odessa drops by your party with her fruitcake, unannounced!

Check out the video tease below. Then, pick up a copy and have some fun!

Happy Birthday Quirky NY Chick!

At 12:31 AM on this day, October 15, QuirkyNYChick.com was born.

When I started this blog, I dived in head first on a bit of a whim. I like to write and I like music. It made perfect sense for me to combine the two so I did. Thankfully, the water wasn't shallow and I didn't hit bottom and knock my quirky self out!

I claimed my little corner of the Internet and ran with it. I gave the blog a logo, a logo that has had more than one person say, 'the one with the big purple L' when I mention my blog name while out and about. So, I guess I chose something memorable. A good thing, right? I've learned a lot about putting together a blog and I'm still learning. With an enormous amount of anxiety and feeling completely out of my depth, I accomplished my very first Q & A. Thanks to James Love of Hot Seconds for helping me learn to swim in those waters. I guess that makes him my human equivalent of water wings. Also, thanks to those friends who talked me through the anxiety! My camera and I found ourselves crouched down in Irving Plaza at an Arc Angels show for my first official photo pit experience. As someone who has always loved concert photography it was exhilarating and terrifying and I couldn't wait to do it again. I headed to Newport, RI for QNYC's first official road trip to take in the 50th anniversary of the Newport Folk Festival. It was exciting, surreal and a wee bit daunting but an awesomely fun experience.

Here I am, a year later, continuing to dish out info and talking music in my oddball, or I suppose I should say, quirky way. I still like to write and I still like music. What's different? A year ago, I thought only my friends and my Mom would stop by once in a while to read. Imagine my surprise when I discovered otherwise! I've been challenged, overwhelmed and proud ... often all at the same time. I've tried to keep it interesting. I've tried to keep it fun. But, most of all, I've tried to keep it me.

It has all been a tremendous amount of fun and I often ask myself why I didn't do this sooner. I've met a lot of interesting people and I've seen a lot of great live music. Thanks to all of the artists whose work allows me to do what I do. Thanks to all of you who have dropped by to visit. To make my first anniversary a little more special, I discovered that QuirkyNYChick.com has been listed on ClickitTicket.com's "Top 20 Music Review Blogs on the Web" ... flattering and especially so for a blog that was a complete unknown just a year ago.

With one year under my belt, I say, "Cheers! Here's to many more years of discussing music in my own delightfully quirky way!"

Holiday Song Update

In my last post, I mentioned Daniel Iorio's "Angels In The Snow." I said I'd buy it if it were for sale. Well, I got word from Daniel that it is indeed available here. Guess what's in my collection now? Cheers!

No Jingle Bells Here

With Christmas being but a week away, the airwaves are filled with Christmas songs. I'm not really much of a holiday song fan. Every year we get bombarded with remakes of "classic" songs done by various artists in every genre imaginable. There are also the annoying songs like "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" which frankly, I'd be happy never to hear again. Why do people like that song?! With that being said, I thought I'd share some of the holiday themed songs that do get a spin in my music player.

Killola's "Santa, Give Us Something We Can Use" ... nice folks that Killola are, you can download it free on their MySpace page. If you're into the more traditional holiday song, you may want to skip this one. But, if you're into the shall we say, more alternative song with a sense of humor, than this one might be right up your ally.

Bob Schneider's "All I Want For Christmas Is My Methadone" ... I believe there's a version on a record he did with The Scabs and there are plenty of live versions floating around.

The BellRays' "Mary Christmas" ... from their Christmas album A BellRays Christmas. This is for those who like their holiday songs funky and rockin'.

Daniel Iorio Group's "Angels In The Snow" ... Daniel got in the holiday spirit and whipped up a great new song apparently last weekend. You can have a listen over on D.I.G.'s MySpace page or on Last.fm. It's a "demo" but I'd put this on the list of holiday songs I'd buy if it were for sale.

Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Christmas Time Again" ... the title track from their Christmas album Christmas Time Again. The Southern rockers show off a bit of soulfulness with this holiday piece.

John Lennon's "Happy Christmas (War Is Over)" ... yeah, this is about as "classic" as I get when it comes to holiday songs.
